Conditioning - Howard Jones

Well you're not, you're not who you think you are

Well, we think that you are John or Dave

But you're not, you're not who you think you are

Jumbled mass of preconceived ideas

Newday - Graham Nash

Where was I yesterday?

Have I been there once before?

And who was I yesterday?

Don’t wanna be him no more

It’s a newday

Peace of Mind - Above & Beyond

If you've ever lost every part of yourself

If you've left your heart on a lonely avenue

It will be only a matter of time

Before your life comes through for you

In between stories, your Archetypes exist in a place with no windows and no tie to an outside world. The Facility, the Hotel, the House - whatever they choose to call it, it's the only true home they have. It consists of a long hallway of doors, each opening to a personal room, a communal parlor, a communal dining room, and a room best described as a dispensary. There is no time in the Facility, no day or night, and no clocks. It simply is.

All of the Archetypes' needs are provided for. They have a closet full of clothing that suits their personal archetype, touch screens in the dispensary offer every kind of cuisine and beverage they can think of, and they can do anything they with their time. There are no jobs, no chores or duties. It's timeless leisure.

After the Island

The Penitent is the first to wake in the Facility after the security trailer explodes on the Isle of Dread. She is alone to explore the place, though not for long, as The Visionary and The Idealist, killed in the same explosion, follow soon after. The Capitalist and The Hunter, injured in the blast, are killed soon after as the helicopter evacuating them from the island explodes. The first reunion is a complicated one, as archetypes who were siblings on the island, but aren't really kin encounter one another, and a pair that became lovers on the island confront the reality of the Facility.

As more new faces arrive, the group tries to figure out where they are, and why they're there. The Rebel appears much unlike how they all remember him from the island, and the mystery of the first unfamiliar resident captures attention as much as the apparent lack of any way to get out. Desperate to find an exit, some of the archetypes begin to settle in, while others begin to tear the place apart to attempt to find an exit or some hint of how the Facility functions. They start to realize they all wake and sleep at roughly the same times, and all the damage they do is gone when next they wake, in the public areas or in their private rooms.

As the futility of escape becomes more clear, the archetypes begin to discuss their former identities with family ties and discuss the new reality as a sacrifice of six on the island brings an influx of new faces, occupying more rooms in the hall. It stirs new questions and conflicts as they settle in.

Thus far, all of the archetypes arriving in the Facility have memories of dying on the island -- until a number of archetypes claiming to have survived the ordeal on the island begin to arrive, including The Judge, The Loner, The Defender, and The Survivor. Many of the new arrivals have trouble adjusting to their new surroundings, and not just because of who is there, but also, because of those who are not, as many of the people important in the archetypes' lives on the island are still not in the Facility, even if mementos of them remain. Since they aren't all dead, who are they really?

After The Creepshow mentions a suicide attempt, The Hunter and The Capitalist put a theory to the test that the Facility will resurrect an archetype if they die, similar to the way in which they will heal over night. This bears an uncanny similarity to the way the place itself is restored as the archetypes sleep. The violence has a profound impact on the participants.

Another new arrival appears in the form of The Lover: an archetype no one recognizes, and who has no memories at all of the island. Meanwhile, the former siblings continue to try to make sense of their different perspectives on the reality of their lives on the island, and a number of the archetypes continue to discuss who they were, and who they might have been. Confusion lingers after the experiment with The Creepshow, and the reality of relationships on the island and in the Facility become more clear to The Capitalist and The Hunter.

One morning when the archetypes wake, they find a change in the common area: a large plasma television, playing only what appears to be a countdown. The change, and what it could mean, cause discussion and unease almost immediately. Another archetype with no recollection of the island, or memories of his life before, arrives in the Facility, emerging from his room like all the others. With the clock winding down, uncomfortable private truths begin to emerge. Ultimately, all the residents can do is watch and wait.

After the Noc

The television is still there, and it's playing Westerns. It can be turned off, but whenever it's turned back on, Westerns again. There are two new doors in the parlor, side by side. They cannot be opened. There is a stereo now, but only classical music is available.

The first arrivals to the Facility in the midst of the archetypes' experience on the Noc include one new, The Stoic, and one who has been through this before, The Fatalist. They are alone for a time, until those killed in the explosion and the survivors begin to flood in en masse, including The Loner, The Defender, The Capitalist, The Visionary, and The Pedagogue. Some were never even human on the Noc. Reunions are different this time, as some relationships change, and memories shift while others linger. For many now trying to assimilate two 'lives' -- in vastly different times, as different people -- reality is all the more strange. New faces have appeared, and others who had been with them in the Facility before have disappeared. The Hunter's memento mori turns out to be Pants, the cat owned by her Alien: Mutation identity, and the friendly feline has the run of the Facility.

The Hunter tries to explain how the experience on the Noc relates to life in the Facility to The Bravo, who had appeared in the Facility without recollections of the island when the archetypes were here before. Among those questions are where the new doors, that will not open, may lead.

Body double confusion kicks in for The Fool and The Visionary in the wake of their time on the Noc, and the two bond over shared losses, while The Thrill-Seeker and The Penitent collide in the halls, and the former Weyland-Yutani scientist embraces the chaos on rollerskates.

The Hunter and The Defender bond over their similarities and contemplate the chances that they might endure another 'alternate life' in the near future.

Still struggling with her former existence as a robot, The Visionary takes out her frustrations on the walls of her room, and finds something unexpected.

The former Weyland-Yutani team meets in the Facility, and discovers their new, different identities. Further discussion ensues about how to handle this new reality, and how differences from the Noc need to be bridged.

The Hunter and The Capitalist discuss the changes in their relationship wrought by their second lives on the Noc, and a similar conversation emerges between The Hunter and The Penitent. The Capitalist and The Penitent, formerly siblings on the Isle, try to ascertain how to connect with one another now.

Some new awakenings are more traumatic than others, and the aftermath leaves the archetypes in a state of confusion and damage control when welcoming The Explorer and The Deviant into the fold. The Deviant revives the next day, but the trauma lingers.

The mystery of the doors lingers as the westerns continue to blare on the television set, giving only a faint warning as to what might await the archetypes soon.

After Prosperity

The Coward is the first to arrive, with The Explorer following almost immediately after. The Loner wakes in the Facility after the banishing of Asmoday in Prosperity, having sacrificed his life for another. Soon after, he encounters The Deviant and The Bravo, both new incarnations of their respective archetypes, with no knowledge of the Isle, the Noc, or Prosperity at all. The Bravo and The Pedagogue meet soon after. The Coward, the Pedagogue, and the Creepshow talk about why the Facility sucks, and The Beast and The Loner share a tragic commonality from their recent story-life. The Creepshow is especially conflicted about this awakening.

The survivors of Prosperity begin to awaken. The Scholar wakes up in the Facility, and the Coward is there to greet him. The Confidant opens his door as ever to any who might need him, with a new addendum. The Capitalist realizes he's lost the life he always wanted as Cillian McTavish when he finds himself back in the Facility. The Penitent wakes for the third time to find her memories muddled, and her surroundings too familiar. The Visionary rises to immediately seek out her partner in sanity. The Addict wakes for the first time to find unexpected environs, and an empty bed.

Five archetypes discuss their situation in the parlor. The Penitent, The Creepshow, and The Capitalist try to come to terms with familiar faces, some here, and some now gone, as well as the changes in their respective relationships over three very different lives. Later,The Addict runs into The Confidant, who gives him, The Crusader, and The Bon-Vivant (one of the unexpectedly brand-new arrivals) an explanation about what's going on.

Various archetypes, old and new, collide over the course of a very long day, and the Coltons from Prosperity catch up with one another in the Facility. With the Capitalist still troubled by the loss of Maata, he is met with faces new and old. Bravo, Loner, Rogue and Bon-Vivant join him as some reminisce about their pasts while informing these 'blank slates' of what's to come. The Confidant runs into The Caregiver in the dispensary, and later, The Explorer, who has missed him. The Penitent visits with the Capitalist, bringing him a bottle of whiskey and some candy. They discuss the difficulties of their relationships and come to a decision on how they should proceed.Things don't always go quite so well in other reunions amongst the survivors, and the aftermath can go a little sideways. Familiar faces get reacquainted with each other. The Coward and the Scholar take a walk in one of the new rooms to a familiar space.

Other lifetimes are discussed among those who survived Prosperity and a new arrival, The Bon-Vivant, while others theorize about the nature of the Facility itself, a conversation that continues into details about their accents, and their lives before. Lovers from Prosperity reunite, and confusion results. The reunions continue with emotions running high, and the archetypes part company to continue working through their experiences and explore the new additions to their surroundings. The Capitalist explores one of the mystery rooms where he finds the Bravo on the stage of an old-fashioned London play house. They discuss everything from the holodeck itself to the Capitalist's many lives and what will be in store for the Bravo. Many choose to explore the Noc.

The Rogue and the Capitalist talk former lives with the Caregiver before the Artist's presence freaks her out. Later that day the Caregiver pays the Capitalist a visit to his room where their topic of conversation gets a little bit heated. The Addict and The Deviant begin to strike up a friendship over the new lives they find for themselves in the Facility, and The Confidant and the Explorer continue to bond, and make up for lost time after growing close in Prosperity shortly before Llesenia's death in the first banishing.

The Beast and the Loner use an Anywhere Room to visit a memory from a first life. The Parlor stays busy as three once-Hargreave sisters — The Penitent, The Explorer, and The Visionary — find each other again, and The Confidant, The Fool, The Addict, The Artist, The Bravo, The Deviant, and The Capitalist join in for discussion of having a get-together to celebrate a missed Christmas, and yet another conversation about the nature of the reality in the Facility. The Bon-Vivant introduces The Caregiver to himself, skateboards, and the Anywhere Rooms, and they too discuss perceptions of reality, albeit with an ocean view.

The Bon-Vivant drops in on the Rogue, inviting him to test a great and terrible idea, and they explore a new perspective. The Penitent and The Capitalist take The Bravo and The Caregiver for a tour of the Noc in an Anywhere Room -- The Deviant unexpectedly shows up as well. Later, after chatting with The Confidant, The Thrill-Seeker and The Addict create a massive Christmas Feast, and The Caregiver, The Scholar, The Coward, The Bon-Vivant, and The Artist all come by; there's much meeting and the newest known arrival gets some potential names.

The Caregiver and the Addict share a conversation in the parlor, beginning with the question of what flowers they'd be.

The Thrill-Seeker introduces the Bon-Vivant to the wonders of roller-skating, and they barely talk about the nature of reality at all! In another Anywhere Room, The Bravo takes The Penitent to the stage to see her practice some lines, and the two share both a conversation and a moment.

The Bravo spends a day at the beach, and a new arrival, the Advisor, discovers her there. The Bon-Vivant discovers The Penitent in the parlor, and perhaps a new name as well.

The Rogue drops in on the Bon-Vivant with baked goods and sympathy. Stepping into one of the mystery rooms, the Bravo finds herself in the Capitalist's fantasy world. They discuss a few things over a dance.

Capitalist, Penitent and the Defender return to Grey Island on the Bravo's insistence, for this is where it all started. Bad memories return, but those affected work to push past them. The Thrill-Seeker later shows up on her way to find Penny, fresh from cooking(!) cornbread and bacon in her room and sharing it with the Bon-Vivant and the Rogue... which at least helps offset the discovery of another annoying aspect of the Resets. Later, a shiny new Rebel appears, and the barely-less-new Bon-Vivant tries to get her oriented.

With the Capitalist's hasty departure from the parlor, the Caregiver takes him up on his offer to give him a tour of her room. In truth, she wants to know how much of Cillian McTavish is left within the man. The Bravo and The Penitent have a moment in the Hallway of Doors, The Thrill-Seeker made quiche. After his discussion with the Caregiver in her room, the Capitalist finds the Bravo camped outside of his. He invites her inside, where she pleads for him to speak to the Penitent. The Capitalist visits the Penitent shortly after speaking to others about it. The conversation is confused and heated, but eventually they seem to come to an understanding once more. The Rogue pays the Bon-Vivant a visit to start tackling the To Do list, and they both learn a thing or two... before the last sleep comes.

After Beaver Lake

The Thrill-Seeker is first to arrive, waking up alone in the Facility after a brutal death.

After a while, the Explorer awakens, and Thrill-Seeker explains the newest horror of the Facility. And they both watch as many more of their friends die horribly. One of the fallen is the Bravo, who wakes up after the final encounter with the Freak. The Scholar checks on The Creepshow. The Martyr awakens after his Finn-Death, and Thrill-Seeker is there to guide him through the process; Misty tries to help him cope with his first Facility awakening, and Creepy and Scholar discover the TV's controversial programming. She doesn't take it terribly well, but it leads to them breaking down some walls. A bit later, Thrill-Seeker, Martyr, Rogue, and Bravo commiserate over the things important to hold onto.

The Martyr comes to knock on Rogue's door to pick his brain, and later discovers the newly arrived Optimist. He attempts an orientation for the even-newer guy.

The next morning, the Martyr and the Optimist try to figure out reality over breakfast. Later, the Rogue and The Martyr set out a feast for returners while contemplating their lot.

The Capitalist wakes up in the facility with a fourth memory, one that he has difficulty shaking out of. Bravo pays him a visit to help him remember.

The Creepshow takes The Scholar to plant some seeds.

The Soldier awakes from her death at Mahoney's hands, and reacts about as well as can be expected. Shortly after that, the Creepshow takes the Scholar to see the Noc.

The Rogue and the Scholar have their first meeting after the Lodge, and discuss numerous things, including whether or not to watch the TV.

The Lover opens up her eyes in the Facility for the first time and finds herself alone, alone... just like a dream.

The Vigilante and the Athlete awaken in the Facility for the first time; they are helped by the Bravo and the Soldier. Athlete remains optimistic.

The Pedagogue wakes up and immediately searches for the Rogue for their reunion. The Bon-Vivant wakes up and immediately searches for the Rogue for their reunion, too, but first finds the Martyr, then the Rogue, and then half the Fac, including the Lover's very first emergence... Partway through, the Bravo takes the Bon-Vivant off to Monte Carlo.

The Coward wakes up in his blanket fort, which the Scholar promptly invades.

The Caregiver awakens for the second time in the facility from her second life and everything starts to clash, including her perspective on where she is now. From out in the hall, hearing the sound and the fury that comes from caring too much, Bravo and Capitalist come in, the latter intervening to center the raging tempest.

The Capitalist stays with The Caregiver awhile after her rough awakening leaves her with injury. He helps her bathe to prepare for dressing and facing the Facility proper, which gives them time to talk and properly close Laine and Christian the way they deserved. The tears and blood and fears are washed away. For now.

The Rogue wakes up somewhere other than where he went to sleep and has an existential crisis. All ends well.

The Rebel emerges from her room, and is welcomed by the Martyr and the Bon-Vivant, the latter of whom she drags back into her room to discuss where things stand now they're back.

A blanket monster almost gets murdered in the parlor by a bloody bride.

The Capitalist comes to return a letter response at the Caregiver's door and hangs around to talk. Unfortunately, conversations don't always go so well in this place. But at least they're in a way to keep having them because the special delivery message holds. The next cycled day, The Caregiver and Capitalist take a timeout on a date in a beautiful neutral space designed to keep them as themselves, not as Christian and Laine. She brings a die to roll for a game to help them stay in the right now, but even as pleased and comfortable as they are in each other's company, the right now is complicated.

The Bon-Vivant and the Competitor finally meet up post-Lodge at dinner with the Martyr, and they discuss past futures, present relationships, and that cupcake thing.

The Rogue comes to check up with the Bon-Vivant, and an attempt is made to address a currently loose end. It doesn't go well.

The Creepshow gets her wish when the Pedagogue agrees to kill her, with most of her close friends attending. It... doesn't go quite as expected.

First thing in the morning, the Martyr drops in on the Rogue to see how he's handling the situation with the Creepshow, and discovers the trouble between him and the Bon-Vivant as well. Afterward, the Rogue goes skateboarding with the Coward, passing through a conversation in the parlor which is interrupted by a commercial on the radio along the way, and the Martyr visits the Bon-Vivant to try to help clear things up.

After Pedagogue breaks a hand skating he and Rogue retire to the bunker to do healing on many fronts, and Rogue comes clean with some guilt.

The Bon-Vivant visits the Rogue, bearing breakfast, and they sort things out. More or less.

The Bon-Vivant finally manages to catch the Thrill-Seeker, and they discuss their situations -- past, present, and at-least-near future.

Folks have a meal and Creepy makes someone a gift.

The Bon-Vivant drops in on the Lover (with breakfast, again) to see how she's holding up, and they make some plans.

The Confidant and The Thrill-Seeker finally have a chance to unpack a few things after Beaver Lake. Hugs happen.

The Rebel and the Bon-Vivant spot the Addict's door open and drop in to catch up.

After Carnival

The Rogue, The Bon Vivant, The Optimist, and the Martyr try to come to terms with the past and change.

People discuss plans for a Dinosaur safari in Briar's room.

Thrill-Seeker (Cheer) invites Martyr (Dare) and Bon-Vivant (Fizz) over for dinner and dessert. They talk of love, life, and tasty goodness.

After Project Icarus

Waking in the Facility again, the Bon-Vivant heads right across to check on the Rogue -- and discovers the Rebel's door is blank. Suddenly understanding the Rogue's experience better than either of them would ever have wanted, the latter coaches him through it. The Rogue convinces him Nyka might yet be here, and they plot ways to find her if she is. As it turns out, they're not needed: when a tipsy BV heads out to get started, there she is.

A few days later, Fizz checks in on Dare, and they discuss the things they have and haven't and might have lost. They decide to mourn the Rebel in the old way, and see what might be regained while letting go.

Waking Up

The first time an Archetype completes a story, dead or alive, they wake up in darkness in their bed. The lights are motion sensitive, and while tossing and turning doesn't trigger them, sitting or getting up will. They awaken with no memory of anything outside of their first story - there is no 'before the Facility'. They find that memories of the story are vivid and real, but memories of their role's lives before that story's starting point are not memories at all, just 'things they know happened'. A birthday, a first kiss, the birth of a child - if it didn't happen within the confines of the story, it's just postcards and sticky notes. They don't have actual memories of it happening, only a sense that it did. They may be hazy at first, but within a few minutes or hours all of the story itself comes back to them. An Archetype might believe they still ARE that person, the role they played, and this is some sort of afterlife. Or they might have a feeling that it wasn't really who they are at all - it's up to the individual player.

Subsequent 'wake-ups' are different in that they're here again, just like before. They have multiple story memories and start to realize something far more complicated is going on. They're living out these stories, sections of their roles' lives, like actors in a movie. How this changes them and their perspective is, again, up to each player. Create your own theories.

Each time they wake up, they do so with one single item from the last story that belonged to their role - this item is at the player's discretion, but cannot be a real weapon. Stage or show weapons, replica weapons, essentially props that are useless in a fight are fine, however.

Archetype Rooms

Each personal room is the same size and shape, but the furnishings and decor vary wildly. Every room is a large-ish hotel-style bedroom, with a bed, a night stand, a vanity, and a walk-through closet that connects to a bathroom with a toilet, shower and tub. These are the standard features. The details depend on the Archetype, and are up to each player. One Archetype may have a king canopy bed, fine art on the walls, and a wardrobe of designer fashion. Another may have no paint on the walls, a concrete floor, a cot and a closet full of fatigues. You decide what fits your Archetype.

Each personal room does not start locked, but can be once occupied. Looting the room of another Archetype who is not currently in the Facility is pointless, however, as we'll get to. On the outside of your door, subtly woven into the wood grain, is an image related to your Archetype and marking that door as yours. You are now able to decide (OOC) what you want yours to be.

Facility Life

There are no clocks, no day or night, and no seasons within the Facility, but everyone finds themselves tired at around the same time. Soon, regardless of where they are or what they do, they fall asleep. When they wake up they are back in their bed, in their night clothes, and everything in the Facility has been cleaned. Dishes are gone, discarded clothes are back in their closet, clean and fresh, and any item taken from their room is returned to its place. No one sees how this is done. It just happens.

Beyond that, Archetypes may do as they please. There are hundreds of books on the bookshelf, yet somehow any book they look for is there. Shakespeare? On the shelf. Medical texts? On the shelf. The biography of JFK? On the shelf. It may take time, but you find it. The same goes for games - any board game, any card game, it's there. The flatscreen TV is gone, and an antique radio cabinet stands in its place. It plays music and audio dramas from the 1930s. You can take a book and read it without it disappearing the next day, and you can make notes, draw or write, etc., and it will be persistent.

There are no windows. There is always fresh air, the temperature just right, but there are no vents. Food and drinks (alcohol and cigarettes, but no drugs or medication) are dispensed inside seamless cubbies below the touch screens in the dispensary. These cubbies have no vents, no panels or hatches. Food and drink simply are there when they slide open, utensils provided, temperature to your tastes.

You cannot escape the Facility. Walls cannot be torn through, and neither can the ceiling or floor. Damage to furniture and such is repaired each time you wake up, back the way it was.

As Archetypes return to the Facility upon death in a story, those still alive are nowhere to be found. Their room is unlocked, but no one is inside. One by one, they simply return. Sometimes someone new steps out, and sometimes they don't return at all. (Archetypes who have idled out or left the game have their rooms reset - nothing on the door, empty room inside - until a new person takes up the Archetype.)

Anywhere Rooms

There are two identical doors in the parlor, side by side, and they now open. They become wherever the first person entering wants them to be, and they remain that way until that place is empty. When the NEXT person goes in, it does the same thing. There are two such rooms, so please share nicely.

There are a few rules in these rooms. They are:

  • These are now populated. Returning to a place from a story transforms you back into your character in that story, and the people within treat you as them. If you never lived in that story, they see you as someone normal for that time and place regardless of your wardrobe.
  • You can't bring anything back. Anything carried, worn or otherwise disappears when you return to the parlor. You CAN, however, obtain an item in one session and will it to be with you in another, even if they are different places and times.
  • If you fall asleep there, you wake up there now as well. In fact, you can spend a LOT of time - weeks, even - inside only to come out and find maybe an hour has passed.
  • If you die there, you wake up back in your room as always.
