Bang Bang - Kaleo

I was five and he was six

We rode on horses made of sticks

He wore black and I wore white

He would always win the fight

Bang bang, he shot me down

Bang bang, I hit the ground

Bang bang, that awful sound

Bang bang, my baby shot me down

Knights of Cydonia - Muse

And how can we win,

When fools can be kings

Don't waste your time

Or time will waste you

No one's going to take me alive

Time has come to make things right

You and I must fight for our rights

You and I must fight to survive

Solaris United (We All Lift Together) - Fortuna

Cold the air and water flowing

Hard the land we call our home

Push to keep the dark from coming

Feel the weight of what we owe

This the song of sons and daughters

Hide the heart of who we are

Making peace to build our future

Strong united, working 'till we fall

And we all lift

And we're all adrift together

Together

Through the cold mist,

'till we're lifeless together

Together

The story is called Prosperity's Price, and is set in Prosperity, NV, starting in August of 1902.

Prosperity is a boomtown by the richest silver mine in the state. In 1824, the founding families made a literal deal with the Devil to make it succeed. You're all descendants of those families.

People come and go, but those 'of the blood' always get pulled back. Each year, from October through December, a flash-flood season hits, and with it a reaping.

Those of the blood know what it really is and have been complicit for generations. Yours will decide to end the curse. That's the victory/survival condition for this story.

October 1st - October 14th, 1902 (The Reaping)

(Week 5: Beginning RL November 4)

It begins with fire.

Levi DeWitt was born the year Prosperity was founded, and he was the reverend for more years than many have been alive. He retired several years ago, but still lives in the little house next to the orphanage and helps look after the children along with his wife, Maura, a live-in maid, and the orphanage staff. Twenty-six children between the ages of two and twelve reside there, and an overnight nanny is always there so the children are never truly alone.

That means that just after the clock strikes midnight on October the 1st, there are a total of thirty souls on the property. Thirty souls trapped in a fire that seems to start from nothing and burn hotter and faster than any natural fire ought. Levi, of course, rushed in for the children, his wife and maid behind him, but it all happens too fast. The town is awakened by the screams of children, twenty-six of them, to be exact, crying out for help, for Reverend Levi, for God. The air is soon thick with the scents of burned flesh, hair and blood. No one will ever forget the sounds and smells.

And in the cruelest joke of all, the rains begin, the start of flood season only minutes too late to have stopped it.

The highest death toll of a Reaping was in 1850, when 58 died between October 1st and Christmas. This year's Reaping is only an hour old, and the death toll stands at thirty.

Jody ruminates over the past, present and possible future as the clock strikes midnight and the Reaping begins. Jody's cousin brings him to Llesenia's cottage for treatment of his wounds.

Deputy Jody DeWitt puts out a call to the town's consumptives.

Two bookworms begin working together on the town's little problem.

Grace Munson reaches out the McTavish heirs with a proposition.

Colorado does a little spirit summoning, on behalf of the town. Questions are asked and answered. After the summoning of Levi DeWitt, Sebastian and Colorado pour over Nolan's books.

Arthur McTavish visits the family's gambling hall to speak to his nephew, Cillian, about what he's witnessed during the seance of Levi DeWitt. Widow leader, Nettie, and Pierce Colton join in on the discussion.

Three Munsons discuss their options.

When Hernando Delgado shows up with an army to hunt Colton Ranchers the resulting shootout leaves the whole Badlands Ranch soaked in blood. Sebastian helps clean Colorado up in the aftermath of the Delgado assault. Several townfolk help the Coltons with their clean up effort after the massacre at the Badlands Ranch the day before.

Sebastian talks to a lawyer about infernal contracts. Fortunately when you're related to the lawyer there's no retainer.

Llesenia Santi brings some hot stew to feed the folks bunkered down at the library where they discuss their town benefactors and Prosperity itself.

Aleister explains to Sebastian that their Grandmother is ride or die.

The Hargreave clan share information and make a plan on their next course of action.

October 15th - October 31st, 1902 (The Reaping)

(Week 6: Beginning RL November 12)

Jack Hargreave informs his children of the contents of their family's contract.

Word has started to pass around town that the orphanage fire is the fault of some of the town's oldest and most prosperous families. Townsfolk have long whispered about the evil that rises every Fall, but now they're talking about a book that the powerful families are supposed to put names in to satisfy that evil as sacrifices and keep it at bay. Some haven't been writing names like they should, and that's why Bad Things like the fire happen. Things got heated and nearly turned into a riot at the Sidewinder the other night. No one knows where these rumors started, but the regular townsfolk are starting to give member of Blooded families dirty, accusatory looks.

Nettie and Cillian find some alone time at his office before they are interrupted by screams outside. There's a frightened crowd surrounding the lynched and mutilated bodies of Jack Hargreave, Seamus McTavish and Robert McTavish. An ominous message is delivered to the new heads of houses. Later that night, two of the Hargreave bastards discuss the spiritual travails of Prosperity with the Sheriff.

Sebastian shares useful information with the recently bereaved come morning, and they all get the Sheriff up to speed on the mess.

Despite his recent tragedy, Cillian McTavish rides to the Badlands Ranch to tell Caleb Colton what he learned about having two co-heads on the contract.

Angeline and Samuel discuss Reverend Levi's death and the passing of their estranged father by the riverbank. Then, she has to explain all of this to Sheriff DeWitt back at the station.

Caleb and Colorado meet their family benefactor. Leon comes home safe and the boys catch up giving him the bad news and trying to plan the family's next steps together.

Sebastian fetches Martin, a recently arrived cousin, and fills him in on all the great things Prosperity has to offer, like amazing wealth and human sacrifice.

Addie finally corners her father, Edmund, for a much needed chat. After her talk with her father, Addie visits Caleb where he tells her about his plan.

The McTavish benefactor, Vie, calls for a meeting with the new family heads of house.

Eilis and Pierce ride out to visit Jericho Davis and his family in the mountains to see if he has any information to spare. Riding to beat sundown, Pierce and Eilis saddle together to ruminate and decompress after a risky trip. Nolan, Cillian and Nettie go to the Badlands Ranch to find Eilis. They get into a discussion with Caleb about contracts, benefactors, wendigo. The journey home is treacherous and full of mud for Cillian, Eilis and Pierce.

Martin and Sebastian have an afternoon drink over some piano music at the Saloon, and are joined by Colorado.

Addie, Evan, and Jody discuss the next name that Edmund is going to write down. Jody does not take it well. Evan tries to step in.

(Week 7: Beginning RL November 19)

Addie reports back to Edmund.

Nettie meets with Zeb after the death of her father.

Isaac and Angeline catch up on the events plaguing the town.

Caleb is haunted by the memory of the death of of his son Gideon, and consoled by Colorado.

After speaking with her Benefactor, Nettie seeks out advice from Cillian. Nettie, Mattie, and Angeline meet Martin in the Town Square, before the Hargreave half-sisters make their way back to the Widows camp to discuss Zeb's revelations with their kin.

Nettie Hargreave runs across Pierce Colton in town and they have a chat about the value of continuing the fight.

Word spreads quickly through town that something big happened at the DeWitt estate and the town's law enforcement is in chaos. Some say that Edmund was murdered in cold blood by one of his own children. As time passes, Jody DeWitt becomes the focus of a manhunt. Jody meets two of the Hargreave sisters on his flight out of town, and they direct him on to the Widow's camp.

The news regarding Edmund DeWitt arrives at the Badlands Ranch; and Caleb sets out to town while Colorado redoubles the family's efforts to defend itself with some help from Sebastian.

Arthur has a confession to make to Nolan and Cillian.

Nettie visits the Library searching for Nolan and strikes a conversation with Eilis. Cillian comes with grim news. Later, a Colton less familiar to Eilis comes to call and walks away with new ammo for planning.

Martin meets the Widow Munson.

Pierce and Caleb ride through the rain after news of Jody got out. Running into Evan they head to the DeWitt house to finally find Addie.

Nolan visits the Widow camp to discuss the situation with the leader of the Black Widow Gang. Nettie, Angeline and Bella speak afterwards.

Martin meets his cousin Isaac for the first time at the Munson Estate, and Isaac warns him to be cautious throughout the rainy season.

Sheriff DeWitt brings his horse, Samson, to the corral at the Widows' camp for some R&R. He meets Llesenia there, and a discussion ranging from recent events to his intentions toward her sister takes place.

Evan DeWitt takes Martin Munson out to teach him how to shoot.

Colorado practices shooting, negotiates a hypothetical marriage.

After listening to much debate, and in the grip of her own confusion, Angeline drifts away from camp to attempt to discern the answer to the questions that plague not only her, but the town.

Pierce comes to check on Eilis and finds her sleepless and full of bad news and new developments.

Angeline brings news about the challenges from a vision: the challenges should begin quickly to prevent more deaths, any member of a family can present the challenge to that family's benefactor, and when the benefactor presents the terms, a champion not from that family -- who can be anyone -- is chosen to meet them. Several members of the McTavish family challenge their benefactor once receiving the news, and Leviathan's challenge is a cruel one: the champion must hurl the person they love the most into the long-since lost mine rumored to have broken through to Hell itself.

Anette meets with Cillian at his father's office at the Crier for a much needed talk. There are some secrets that should never be revealed.

Colorado and Sebastian argue about which of them is going to do stupid things.

November 15th - November 31st, 1902 (The Reaping)

(Week 8: Beginning RL November 26)

Angeline and Llesenia discuss Leviathan's challenge at the Widow's Camp, and discuss the ways best to fight the curse going forward.

Nolan tells Cillian about his theory regarding the location of Hell's back door.

Nettie finally talks to Jonah about her suspicions. She ends up trying to convince him to be the one to challenge the Hargreave benefactor.

The Colton boys challenge Mo.

Martin Munson visits the Town Library and makes the acquaintance of the delightful Eilis McTavish.

Discussions around the fire on the outskirts of the Widows' Camp turn toward strange plans and preparations for the ride into town, to deliver Jody to the sheriff's station.

Arthur, Glenn, Cillian, Martin, and Sebastian are going over the location of the door to hell when they're interrupted by an uninvited guest.

The former fugitive Jody DeWitt is brought back into Prosperity proper by the sheriff, his remaining deputies, and some of the Widows. Once there, discussion arises about the challenge to the Hargreave benefactor, after which events progress rapidly: Llesenia calls out to Zeb, issuing a challenge on behalf of the Hargreaves, before Jonah can take action. When Zeb appears, the task is set: "Your champion will go out into the wild with me, and without food, water or shelter shall survive for six days. I will tempt them, offer them drink when they are dying of thirst. Food when they can barely breathe from hunger. I will offer them everything they could ever desire, their deepest, truest desires. If they are alive when the sun rises on the seventh day, I will release my bond to this land." Heck and Cillian volunteer, as a handful of Munsons gather to discuss possibilities for their own challenge to Giles.

The Hargreave sisters discuss the challenges and their champions at the sheriff's station with Heck, who has offered to tackle the Hargreave challenge as champion. Out of concern for the sheriff -- or perhaps sheer insanity -- they try for a Hail Mary play that might help him survive it. He'll have to survive a whole flask of rum first.

The Munsons challenge Giles, then go to see some Hargreaves about their vineyard. Barbas' challenge is daunting, if not insurmountable--a champion from one of the other four primary families must destroy that family's source of wealth to its root. But there's a larger issue: Barbas claims he cannot be banished even when he loses his physical bond, because he's become too powerful from all he's been given over these many decades, and he promises to make Sebastian, Isaac, and Martin pay for crossing him.

Caleb and Sebastian have a conversation in the general store, and pull a fast one on Colorado.

With time running short, Cillian calls on Colorado to discuss paying off debts owed to the gambling hall. With Nettie's arrival, both she and Cillian discuss the completion of the McTavish challenge and the sacrifice that the both of them will be making for it.

Nolan and Sebastian discuss the various benefactor challenges when they make a discovery that may very well lead them to the old mine.

Caleb plays a little prank on Colorado.

Three junkies, the Sheriff, and a nice young woman named Llesenia hang out at the Sheriff's office discussing the matters of the day.

Eilis has a bittersweet timeout at the family home that becomes less bitter, more sweet.

Nettie Hargreave brings her fellow Widow, Esther Munson, vaguely up to date on the most recent happenings for this Reaping. Eilis McTavish joins their conversation with intent to set a plan in motion.

As the McTavish cousins prepare for their trip to the old mine, in honor of what Jeremiah had said before he died about keeping no secrets from one another, Cillian lets Nolan in on the one he's been keeping.

The final challenge is issued to the DeWitt family's benefactor, Igor, otherwise known as Belphagor, when Jody DeWitt -- though named in the family's red ledger -- calls him out to present the task that will allow the contract to be broken, and sever Belphagor's tie to the land. It is another painful choice: the champion must be of child-bearing age, and in good health; they are to drink a potion that will waste them away to a husk over the next six days, and they will live at least sixty years this way, in the misery of inescapable Sloth. The DeWitts discuss their contract, in hopes of examining it to help the five families of the blood on the whole. Jonah Hargreave and Eilis McTavish step away from the crowd to strategize on the upcoming challenges, and what could be done if things go awry.

Caleb and Martin kill a bottle of booze over speculating about their futures.

Nettie and Angeline discuss the possibility of the Hargreave family tackling the Munson family challenge, and the fate of the vineyards and farms. The sisters seem to come to an accord on the matter, and when Heck arrives at the station, they discuss symbols, purpose, similarity, and duty to those who come after.

Cillian and Nettie return to a place which they remember with fondness just so Cillian can ask an important question. Meanwhile, being in the baby McTavish girl's bedroom is a bad way to avoid a shotgun wedding, and Pierce plans to avoid that gun bit and roundabout confesses his intent.

Angeline, Jonah, Martin, and Sebastian discuss the Munson and DeWitt challenges in the Sheriff's station.

In which Sebastian realizes he never has to go back to the Munson Estate.

December 1st - December 7th, 1902 (The Reaping)

(Week 9: Beginning RL December 3)

Sebastian Munson speaks to Samuel Hargrave about the Munson's family challenge. Nettie Hargreave shows up to speak to her brother about her troubles. Martin Munson comes looking for Arthur.

With Samuel offering to take on the role of champion for the Munsons, a family dinner is planned to bid farewell to the Hargreave vineyards and farms, and their estate. Family has a new definition, however, and includes more than just the Hargreaves alone. Two of the Hargreave half-sisters set up for the family dinner, and chat about life after, and the love they both hope comes along with it. As the party wears on through the day and into the night, Cillian and Caleb catch up before the zero hour for a very real talk about things to come with Colorado and Sebastian in the garden. Angeline presents Samuel with the sword granted to her by Isaac Munson, as promised. Later, Heck and Angeline talk briefly about the coming challenge from Zeb, just before the fields burn.

Heck sets out to meet the terms of the Hargreave challenge, and has a long and unexpected conversation with Zeb.

Colorado has a nightmare and consults his Tarot deck the night before Barbas is to be banished.

Barbas, the King of Greed and Lion of the Pit, is banished, at great cost: Eilis' hair is shocked to white, Colorado is turned to a pillar of salt, Jonah's dominant hand withers three fingers, Nolan's leg twists into a club, Glenn is blinded in one eye, Llesenia's mind is shattered, and Sebastian and Nolan are set ablaze in the final blow the demon strikes before it is sent back to hell.

Cillian listens to Nolan's dying request, forcing him to make a difficult decision. Jody wrestles with the horror of the tragedies that have befallen those who faced Barbas. Pierce, Sebastian, and Caleb bring their fallen brother, Colorado, home.

More challenges are undertaken as Caleb and Evan ride out to tackle the Delgado gang.

Eilis reflects on the pain of loss in this year's Reaping.

After Cillian leaves the library to give Nolan's book to Jonah, he meets up with Pierce who had sought to find him immediately following Caleb and Evan's departure to Arizona.

Leviathan, Queen of Envy, Serpent of the Lake of Fire breaks the contract and is then banished at great cost: Josephine is struck dead before her heart stops in her chest as the demon is sent back to hell, and Bella's assault on the Wendigo with Mercy and Vengeance overwhelms her. Conflict ensues in the aftermath over the DeWitt challenge, and even The Devil Himself weighs in on current events.

After Pierce Colton's offering to the DeWitt's challenge as honorable backup, Eilis has some choice words and a deal for forgiveness-- it only takes three words and a bit of string.

In the wake of Leviathan's banishing, Sebastian Munson seeks Jonah Hargreave in the Sheriff's Station to bring him both the good and bad news, and to ask for a favor.

Caleb returns to the Colton Ranch after helping Evan complete the Colton family challenge to Asmoday.

Eilis McTavish tends to an ailing an exhausted Jonah Hargreave and hopes to find a way to circumvent the cruel demand of Belphegor's challenge.

Eilis McTavish calls on Anette Hargreave to discuss her plans. Nettie tries to talk her out of it, but leaves understanding the choices Eilis might feel she has to make.

Cillian and Nettie meet at the chapel after Vie's banishing. Was it fair for them to be happy, if just for this moment, after all the sacrifices that were made?

December 8th - December 24th 1902 (The Reaping)

(Week 10: Beginning RL December 10)

Members of the Coltons and the DeWitts meet at the Badlands Ranch to discuss the tensions and pledges surrounding their respective challenges and champions, as family tensions run high and plans are made for the future.

The town gathers at the library to banish Asmoday who calls in a familiar face for aid. Once He's defeated and out of spite, Asmoday slays the one who actually banishes him, Angeline. To atone for his selfish acts, Glenn offers his own life in exchange for Angeline's when his reviving mask fails them.

In the aftermath, Pierce and Eilis come together discuss the bonds of family, and their new marriage. When Cillian returns home to relieve the Colton from his watch over Eilis, Pierce has a request for Cillian. Martin, after his injuries in the banishing, goes to seek out Arthur to discuss their potential future, their feelings for one another, and the kind of life they could have. The Colton family comes together for what may be their last dinner together as they debate Igor's challenge, and try to determine who, if any of them, should take the potion that would sever Belphagor's tie to the land and enable his banishing. At the sheriff's station, Heck, Isaac, Nettie, and Angeline are still shocked by the events at Asmoday's banishing, and are trying to recover from the turmoil. Then, Angeline passes along some of what she learned about Zeb from Heck, and a previously secret conversation she had with the demon herself after the completion of the challenge.

Cillian and Anette spend a brief moment together to discuss what happens with Zeb and the promise Cillian made to one particular Colton about what to do with Eilis.

Jody DeWitt names his family's Champion and all Hell breaks loose. The town must come together one last time to vanquish the demon, Belphagor.

Cillian and Nettie return to the McTavish estate after the Belphagor banishing to find a distraught Eilis sitting in front of the family's grandfather clock which had gone silent. Deputy Jody DeWitt comes to pay his respects to the young McTavish after Pierce was made his Champion.

Epilogue

What Remains

Those who survived have memories of about a year from the day of the last banishing, but like the memories before RP started they're more like postcards and sticky notes than real memories. Feel free to include survivor experiences in short form here for that year long period.

Cillian McTavish (Archetype)

Anette McTavish, leader of the Black Widow Gang, sets about stepping down from the outlaw group. With the Reaping done, she pushes to have the group disband and live their lives, but really leaves it up to that collective group of women to figure out what they want to do with their lives. Undoubtedly some remain and continue the reputation of the Black Widow Gang, the fiercest women in the West. Another ceremony is held in Prosperity for the wedding of Cillian McTavish and Anette Hargreave, a proper wedding instead of the hasty affair that saw them married during the Reaping. The two of them join the group heading to New Orleans to spend some time away from all the horrible memories among friends and family that shared them, but within a few months, Cillian and Anette return to the West to begin living the life they had always wanted to. Finding themselves in Vegas, Cillian's skills for making money see them doing well for themselves for the foreseeable future. A few months after that, they welcome their first child into the world, a daughter named Maria Noel McTavish.

Eilis McTavish (Archetype)

Eilis McTavish Colton didn't have a happy ending with Pierce Colton. She had an ending with him, yes, and a bit of a life after with the semblance of him left and it wasn't orthodox. It wasn't easy. Some days were good. Some days were wretched. But she made it work for as long as she could. The woman who lost damn near everyone in her life never left his side after packing at the Estate and heading out to the Coltons to fall into them as family for months, wherever they roamed. It was a well-earned space, aside from from the embracing promises-- she was carrying not one, but two little cowboys. Pierce languished in curse and withered, Eilis grew with life and love and promise. An hour after giving the last of her strength to -free- those strongly nurtured, precious lives, weakened by the banishings and hard labor, she succumbs to blood loss. And her dying words aren't sad. They're relieved. They won what they were fighting for in the end, together. They made something left to thrive in those little free beautiful newborn souls. A future.

Jody DeWitt (Archetype)

Jody DeWitt, went to New Orleans with the others but didn't spend a week in their company. He moved to Baton Rouge as a measure of self-exile, going as far as to change his name, officially, to Joseph P. Gideon. P for Prosperity. He found a doctor to amputate his damaged leg and, after much struggle, quit Laudanum. He talked his way into becoming a consultant of sorts to the Baton Rouge Police, putting his detective skills to use. It was not to last. As the one year anniversary of the last Reaping approached, Jody was found dead, by his own hand, in his spartan apartment. He left no note and was buried in a paupers grave.

Colorado Colton (Archetype)

The spiritual wounds Sebastian Munson sustained at the hands of Belphagor, the spirit of Colorado Colton dams up and fills with himself. They become symbiotic more than possessed. The two of them, their souls entwined, have a life for themselves after all. It's not the ever-after they expected, but it is one, of a sort. When the Coltons move to Arizona Sebastian goes with them; he still writes his siblings, but they're the only connection he maintains to his birth family; even his name he abandons. In Arizona, Sebastian is that strange Colton vet possessed by a ghost, the one whom the town- and cityfolk get wildly uncomfortable around, so he mostly stays on the ranch. Sometimes he'll attend a festival and read peoples' cards, since he has the look *and* bearing for that kind of thing now.

Pierce Colton (Archetype)

A future.

Nettie Hargreave (Archetype)

Sebastian Munson (Archetype)

Prosperity, Nevada

Town.jpg

Prosperity is a boomtown built next to a silver mine in the high plains desert of Nevada. It's greener than much of the surrounding land and neighboring towns, a little paradise out in the middle of nowhere. The population swings from a high of nearly 3000 in the peak of mining season - late Winter through early Summer - and dwindles down to about half of that by October, when the mine closes for the rest of the year due to heavy rains and flooding.

Mining isn't the only thing in town, however, and there are several successful cattle ranches, a few fertile farms, and even a couple gambling halls. It's a fairly wealthy town with good schooling opportunities and many young families, too. Many consider it a real gem in the vast desert of the frontier.

Grim History

HoyodelDiablo.jpg

Founded in the Spring of 1824 by thirteen families of settlers, Prosperity has always been a mining town. The original mine has long since been closed, and its exact location lost to time. Those of the Blood call it Hoyo del Diablo - the Devil's Pit - but the rest of the town doesn't even know it ever existed.

The original mine hit a hole straight to Hell, and rather than seal it off, the founding families made a deal with the Devil to make their mine and town the richest in the area. They sacrificed seven migrant miners, killing one and leaving the other six trapped down in the mine, forced to eat him for survival. That mine - Hoyo del Diablo - was sealed off, and a new mine was opened that prospered far beyond the families' wildest dreams.

In return, the Devil got souls - every year after there came a season that the Blood call the Reaping, during which a number of people disappear or die in freak accidents. It used to be many more, but over time some of the Blood - most notably the Widows - have stood up to protect the town and the people. While it is still no fewer than 13 each year, it's no longer the several dozen or more that it once was.

The Reaping

Story3.jpg

Early October each year begins the rainy season, with plenty of flash floods and mudslides. Mining shuts down until the start of the new year and some of the miners cash out and go on their way. It's a time when people go missing, swept away by nature - or so they say. Those of the Blood know better. It's the Reaping, when the Devil takes His due.

At night the minions of Evil rise from Hoyo del Diablo and quietly prey upon the people of Prosperity, and even with the Widows and others fighting to protect them, the Devil gets His share of souls. It would be much worse without the Widows, of course, but they can only do so much. By Christmas Day the Reaping is over and life returns to normal until the next time around.

Families of the Blood

There were thirteen families in Prosperity that founded the town and made the deal with the Devil, and all thirteen survive in present-day. Four have left the area, cashing out and moving on as best they can, though every living member finds themselves returning from time to time. Of the nine still in town, five dominate while the other four have dwindled over the years.

The Devil and His Demons

TheDevil.jpg

The Devil gets a bad rap. Just ask Him, He'll tell you! Almost everything that gets attributed to 'The Devil' is actually the work of a demon, and there are lots of demons. Sometimes they appear as demons - horrific beasts and twisted, semi-human creatures, and other times they appear as humans. It really depends on the demon in question and their moods or whims. It's safe to assume that, unless the Director says otherwise, all of your bargains and marks come from one demon or another and not the Devil Himself.

What demons are we using in this story? Anything and everything the Director feels like using. MOST of them will be Goetic - from The Goetia or The Lesser Key of Solomon, but some may come from other sources. There are no hard and fast rules on demons, so OOC knowledge of them may not be very useful. You've been warned!

Characters who would know about or be able to research demons can ask the Director questions as we go.

The Contract

For those with IC access to it, this is it.

Basic Terms

A few basic terms and concepts are set out at the start.

  • Parties: There are two parties to this contract - Benefactors and Beneficiaries. The Beneficiaries are listed as the thirteen family heads at the time the contract was made. The Benefactors are listed as five individual demons by name - Asmoday, Belphagor, Baelzebub, Barabas and Leviathan.
  • Clauses: There are two types of clauses in the contract, defined as Foundational and Conditional. The former are always in effec an cannot be broken (literally!) while the latter are dependent on various triggers and conditions.
  • Rewards: The rewards for each side are Harvest (Benefactors) and Bounty (Beneficiaries), and mean souls and material gains respectively.
  • Duration: The contract has a term of 666 years.

Foundational Clauses of the Agreement

This section covers all the required and mandatory parts of the contract, which cannot be broken. The Beneficiaries agreed to allow the Benefactors to claim a minimum of 13 souls per year. How these are decided is covered later under Conditional clauses. There are, however, restrictions that are not conditional. They are:

  • The Head of a Family may not be Harvested unwillingly or unwittingly. Neither may those designated as the HoF's heirs. Heirs are covered under Conditional clauses.
  • The Beneficiaries are to receive a Bounty each year in return. Each Beneficiary family determines the form and nature of their Bounty, covered under Conditional clauses.

Conditional Clauses: The Reaping

This section covers the nitty gritty of how souls are chosen and the terms of the Reaping, from which the Harvest is taken. At the core, it reiterates that the Benefactors WILL get at least 13 souls. The original terms agreed upon were the Red Ledgers, books provided to each Beneficiary to write at least one name in. This was the way it was initially handled. It does provide for alternatives if a family, for whatever reason, does not give a name. In such cases the Benefactors may choose, but the restrictions previously mentioned apply - no Head of Family or Heirs. Additionally it stipulates that the Benefactors may take more than 13, but any beyond the 13 required must come from townsfolk not of the Blood. Furthermore, the Beneficiaries get no say in them and cannot protect them unless willing to risk themselves for them. Attempting to prevent the Reaping of a soul waives any protection that Beneficiary may have, including HoF and heirs. This is where the "unwillingly or unwittingly" bit comes in play. Choosing to interfere makes you willing and witting. It then defines the agreed upon dates of Reaping and the means of killing the Harvest.

Conditional Clauses: Bounty

This section stipulates that each family head sets the terms of what they want in return as Bounty for the Harvest. Land, money, health - they can request most anything 'material and real in nature'. So a promise of going to Heaven, or livng forever are not feasible, but adding years to your life, having healthy children, and so on are just as valid as a rich harvest, a large herd, or a hefty haul from the mines. Family heads can alter their Bounty by discussing the changes with the Benefactors. All 'reasonable' requests are granted.

Conditional Clauses: Disputes

The original contract ends with the fine print, the means for suing for a grievance. Apparently the contract is backed and enforced by The Devil Himself, and He is the sole arbiter of violations. If Beneficiaries and Benefactors cannot settle a dispute over terms, He can hold court for a trial.

The Addendum of 1851

So in 1851 Grandma Munson essentially blew shit up. She wrote names of non-heirs from OTHER families in her ledger and that year's Reaping was a bloodbath. The four families that left and are no longer in the deal were particularly decimated. They had no one left that wasn't an heir, and if those were put up for Reaping the families would die out in a matter of years. They immediately surrendered their stakes in the mine to the Munsons in return for being let out of the contract altogether. Eleanor made that happen. Then she got the weakest remaining four to give her THEIR stakes in return for being allowed to name non-family members going forward as they, too, were much smaller now. How'd she get the Benefactors to agree to all this? She gave them the souls of an entire generation of Munsons - all your parents - upon their natural deaths. Now you know why you grandkids are heirs!

Lastly, she got the Coltons, DeWitts, Hargreaves and McTavishes to sell their stakes in return for a new clause prohibiting what she did from happening again. Families can no longer write each other's names in ledgers. That's why it never escalated into a war of ledgers.

With only five power families left, the five Benefactors attached themselves to a family, each, began to live among them and cannot be hurt by them. Likewise they cannot hurt family members. Each of the five families now owed two names a Reaping, else the Benefactors could Reap two of their choice from non-heirs. This was to carry the burden of the families that no longer contributed.

Edit Prosperity's Price Setting Page

The Hargreave Family

A racially diverse family with strong ties to the land, and full of bastard offspring.

The Hargreaves have dominated farming around Prosperity since the early days, growing a number of solid cash crops. As one of the wealthiest families - only the Munsons have more money - they also are second in land only to the Coltons. This combination of wealth and land translates into a good deal of influence in town. The family has a reputation for hard work, something of a religious bent, and a strong respect for education. Interestingly, their history with alcohol is almost legendary. The current head of the family, Jack, is a well known drunk and philanderer, and has more children with other women than he does with his wife Janet - most of them with the help. Many say Jack could run Prosperity if not for the drinking and womanizing.

Challenge
And there it is. So you challenge me, Baelzebub, King of Gluttony, Defiler of the Pure and Virtuous? As you wish. Your challenge is this: Your champion will go out into the wild with me, and without food, water or shelter shall survive for six days. I will tempt them, offer them drink when they are dying of thirst. Food when they can barely breathe from hunger. I will offer them everything they could ever desire, their deepest, truest desires. If they are alive when the sun rises on the seventh day, I will release my bond to this land.

The Munson Family

Mysterious and secretive, they are the richest family, in charge of the mines.

The Munsons own the mines, having bought out the shares of every other family over the years, and are hands down the richest family of the Blood. They're also insular, secretive, and not entirely trustworthy. If not for the fact that they are tied into the other families by the shared deal, they could have taken over Prosperity long ago. The others keep them in check. As a family they value dignity and sophistication, are well educated, and have good manners. They also come across like they think they're better than everyone else. The head of the family is Eleanor, an old, widowed spinster that rules the family like an ancient queen.

Challenge
You challenge Barbas, King of Greed, Lion of the Pit? So be it. My challenge is this: your champion must come from one of the other four primary families, and has six days to destroy the root of their family's wealth in its entirety. Everything that they profit from is to be ruined for my satisfaction.
Their source of wealth. Every head of cattle, if the champion is a Colton. The entire vinyard and farmland, if Hargreave. And so on.

The McTavish Family

A gregarious family of traders, shop-keeps, gamblers and craftsmen.

The McTavish family is not the wealthiest, not the most influential, and not the most respected. They are, however, the most well-liked. They're popular, generally outgoing and hospitable, and always have whatever it is you're looking for. Theirs is the most diversified of holdings, with shops, an inn, a brewery and a gambling hall all owned by one member or another. The family has two brothers that share the head of the table - Seamus and Robert - with the older Seamus being the official mouthpiece and younger Robert the book-keeper. Their businesses also mean the family hears a lot and knows a lot of what goes on in town.

Challenge
You challenge Leviathan, Queen of Envy, Serpent of the Lake of Fire? Very well. My challenge is this: Your champion must take the person they love most and hurl them into the original pit your forefathers dug, for I am covetous and I want what they hold most dear. You have six days.

The Colton Family

A rugged and eclectic family of cattle ranchers with more than its share of personal demons.

The Coltons are a true Western frontier family - cattle ranchers, land owners (they own more land than any other family), and pioneers. They are rugged individualists, skilled artisans, and strong leaders. They smith their own iron and steel and maintain their own grazing lands. They also have a history of addiction, occultism and more than a few outlaws. Their pride and strength means they don't like accepting help and won't admit when they need it. When cornered, they use anything at their disposal and often only dig a deeper hole. The head of the family is Roger, an old hand in the cattle business and one of the best guns in the area.

Challenge
You challenge me, Asmoday, King of Wrath and General of Atrocities? So it shall be, Mr. Colton.
My challenge is this: A champion with a heart full of anger and hate shall ride two days to the Southeast, and there they shall find the remnants of the Delgado gang. Alone, they shall slaughter each and every last one for what they did to this land. For I did not call Delgado here. One warrior against twenty. You have six days should you accept these terms.

The DeWitt Family

A family built on law and order, but what that means exactly to each member is open to... interpretation.

Structure holds things together, and the DeWitts are very much about structure. Integrity. Order. It's little surprise that they've basically been the law from the start of Prosperity, and they've long had an interest in keeping the peace. Judges, Sheriffs, Mayors - they've had them all in the family at one point or another. The problem is that not everyone in the family can agree on what the 'right' thing to do is, and because of that they often have internal strife. The Widows were created by a DeWitt (Hannah) in 1831, another example of the family never having a single, definitive view of law and order. The current head of the family is Edmund, an older, highly-regarded county judge who only stepped up after his younger brother Earl, the Sheriff, passed suddenly in the last year.

Challenge
You challenge Belphagor, King of Sloth, Dragon of Decay? Very well, my challenge is this: Your champion must be young, healthy and full of potential. They will drink from a chalice, and over six days waste away to a husk, trapped inside it mind and soul, until the eend of their long, pointless life.
Child-rearing age, no illness or ailments, no permanent injuries. Someone with a long, productive life ahead of them. And no, they cannot have their misery ended for them. You'll find that every attempt to kill them fails, any try for merciful death is denied. They will live at least six decades in that wasted shell. Once your champion drinks, however, I will release my bond to this land.

The Black Widow Gang

Widows.jpg

The deal with the Devil didn't sit right with every member of every family, and when families started leaving unwanted daughters out for Evil to take, some of the women decided that something had to be done. Over a number of years the Widows were formed, a gang of women desperados that honed their skills by ravaging the countryside for most of the year before coming home by Reaping, when they'd defend the innocent from Evil. They steal cattle, raid trade caravans and rob trains, hold up banks, attack other outlaw camps and more - basically looking for trouble and using it to sharpen their skills and reflexes.

Most of the present-day Widows are wanted in several states, and they're seen as outlaws by much of the region, but to the people of Prosperity they're guardians. Even those not of the Blood see them pulling strangers out of the mud and running off wild animals that get too close to town. Locals never have much to say to the Marshals that come to town from time to time, looking for them, and even the Sheriff finds excuses not to help.

That's not to say that every Widow is universally loved in town. Many don't like any of them on an individual basis given their hobbies and ways, but they're respected as a group for what they do for the community.

Other Families of the Blood

There are eight other families of the Blood.

No Longer Local

The following families only return occasionally for short periods of time as they are compelled to by the curse. These families have dwindled in number (less than ten in each) and moved on.

Crenshaw Family
A small family of doctors, dentists and barbers.
Hannah Family
A handful of religious zealots that have 'found God' and turned their backs on their legacy.
Whitmore Family
A little clan of traveling showmen.
Anderson Family
The last few members of a line of prospectors.
Local Families

The four that are still in town but no longer major players in Prosperity are listed below.

Davis Family
Trappers and fur traders. Rugged and private, keeping to themselves.
Lancaster Family
The only family still tied to the mines save the Munsons. They sold their stake in it, but still work it and help with administration.
Thompson Family
Idle rich, living off their stake and the investments that it bought. Wealthy but not particularly influential.
Orzibal Family
Coach makers and carpenters. They built half of Prosperity, but have seen better days.

Wendigo

Wendigo.jpg

The six miners who slowly starved, forced to eat each other to survive until none were left. They are now forever cursed to hunt humans and eat their flesh. They can be killed - though it takes a lot to do so -but they always rise again the next Reaping.

DAMAGE TOKENS: 20* (see below)

Components and Weaknesses

Components

King of Beasts
Wild animals often follow them, hunting with them. Wolves, coyotes and even bears are common.
Ferociously Fast
They cannot be outrun on foot. Running from them gains no SP beyond the first 4, and no running roll can allow for escape from a Kill Scene. Horses can outrun them.
Scent of Blood
Once they smell blood, they cannot be shaken. Hiding from them gains no SP if the character is bleeding.
Teeth that Bite
A bite does 1d6 SP to the victim.
Claws that Catch
A swipe of their claws does 1d4 SP.
Regeneration
Each round that they are above 0 in Damage Tokens, they regenerate 3.

Weaknesses

Sunlight
They are nocturnal, and must retreat from sunlight.

The Mudkin

Mudkin.jpg

Hands that reach up out of the muddy ground during and after a flash flood, some believe that they are the restless dead from previous Reapings, hence the name. They reach up and grab feet, hooves, even wheels and bog them down in the mud, pulling them under like quicksand. They can strike day or night, but only while the ground is wet.

DAMAGE TOKENS: 1 per hand* (see below)

Components and Weaknesses

Components

Many Hands
Many, even dozens of hands at a time can reach up out of the mud. The initial roll to avoid being grabbed is Finesse (with reflex-based qualities adding a bonus), but once grabbed it becomes a Brawn check to get free. A failed Finesse roll results in 1d10 hands grabbing the victim. They do not cause SP loss upon initial grip.
Mud Flats
Characters must navigate the area - not just a single attempt. Succeeding on a Finesse roll one round is usually not enough. The Director will say how big the muddy area is and how many rolls must be made to get through it.
Drag You to Hell
Each round after being grabbed, the victim must roll Brawn (strength qualities give a bonus, as does assistance from others as normal). On a failure, they lose SP equal to HALF the number of hands grabbing them, rounded up (1-5). A basic success holds the victim steady - no ground gained or lost. An exceptional success breaks free of a number of hands equal to the match value of the roll. Only once the victim has broken free of all the hands can they escape.

Weaknesses

Hands Can Bleed
Shooting the hands can help. Each successful roll to shoot at the hands removes a hand from the struggle as it lets go and sinks below. A failure results in a miss. A failed roll that includes a 1 and top number (6/8/10) results in hitting the person you are trying to help, costing them 1SP.

Shades

Shades.jpg

Evil spirits, usually unseen by the naked eye, that lurk and cause tragedy wherever they can. Not all are ghosts or remnants of the dead, but some particularly terrible people live on as Shades after death. Many are just thought to be demons or devils, creatures of Hell set loose by the Reaping. While most never take a form or shape and cannot directly harm a person, some can.

DAMAGE TOKENS: Special* (see below)

Components and Weaknesses

Components

Incorporeal
All Shades are incorporeal, though a few can take a tangible form. This means that they cannot be harmed by physical means unless they become tangible. They also cannot directly harm the living. They must be warded off via Compel Evil with Spirit.
Fiddlesticks
They can manipulate objects by applying force. Slamming a door, knocking over a lantern, etc., are all within their means. They can cause great calamity this way, up to and including death.
Soul Terror
A Shade that passes through a person stirs an intense feeling of dread within them. Treat as a Freak-Out check, but the effects last for the scene on a failure.
Possession
A rare few can jump into a person and puppet them for a short time. Same as above, but a failure hands full control of the victim to The Director.
Take Shape
Those who can solidify are able to do anything a living person can, including use firearms. They have 4-8 Damage Tokens, and go incorporeal on 'death'.
Indomitable
Very rare, but a few can ignore commands and compulsions outright, but will eventually leave. These are the worst and most powerful of Shades and must simply be survived.

Weaknesses

Compellable Evil
By using Compel Evil, most Shades can be ordered to leave.

Spirit

Spirit is being handled a bit differently for this story. In addition to Freak-Out checks, social manipulation and feats of will, it allows characters to sense and interact with the supernatural. Certain Perks grant the ability to automatically do some of these things with a simple GP expenditure, but anyone can roll to do them.

Sense Spirits
From feeling a chill in the corner of the room or the hair on your arms stand up, anyone can ask to try and sense the presence of spirits in an area by rolling Spirit. A success gives you a vague feeling, and an exceptional success gives more specific information.
Sense Evil
A sudden sinking feeling, or a sense that someone just walked over your grave, you can try to sense Evil in the same way. A success gives you a vague feeling, and an exceptional success gives more specific information.
Compel Spirit
You can attempt to command a spirit to do one thing - answer a question, show you a vision, run away, etc. An exceptional success is required.
Compel Evil
You can attempt to command Evil to do one thing - answer a question, show you a vision, run away, etc. An exceptional success is required.
Summon Spirit
You can attempt to summon a spirit when none is present. An exceptional success is required.
Summon Evil
You can attempt to summon Evil when none is present. An exceptional success is required. (This is where Devil's Bargains come from.)
Divine Fate
Tarot, palm reading, fire watching - you can attempt to get glimpses of things to come, but note that the future is always in flux so things can change! An exceptional success is required.

Kudos

Genre Points

Because GP will no longer buy Perks in story 4, we are changing the Survival and Story Death awards. Surviving a story will get you 3GP that WILL carry over to the next story. Agreeing to die at a crucial story moment will give you 5GP to carry over. The First to Die bonus is also 5GP, and carries over.

: He was murdered by Hernando Delgado in a massacre at the Badlands Ranch during the Reaping.
: Found lynched and hung outside of the train depot alongside the McTavish brothers, Seamus and Robert. Jack had his eyes removed. See No Evil.
: Shot in the chest by his own son, Jody, when confronted on why Jody's name was written in the ledger.
: Found lynched outside of the train depot alongside his brother, Robert, and Jack Hargreaves. Seamus had his tongue cut out. Speak No Evil.
: Found lynched outside of the train depot alongside his brother, Seamus, and Jack Hargreave. Robert's ears were cut off. Hear No Evil.
(Archetype): Was aged 60 years during the fight against Belphagor and then took his final hit before the demon was finally banished.
(Archetype): The biggest of the Big Bads, Barbas, lashed out in desperation and with terrifying potency during his banishment. His roar swept through her, shredding her mind and leaving her in a permanent vegetative state.
: Levi DeWitt burned in a fire along with 26 young orphans, his wife and some staff when the orphanage suddenly went up in flame a few minutes after midnight on the first day of the Reaping.
(Archetype): The cursed chalice in the form of a tin cup is offered by Belphagor and as the named Champion, Pierce drank the dark red liquid. Then his body fails him, completely, not to the point of death but it is as if his mind was completely severed from his body and six days of hell begins for the Colton. The first two days he is cognizant of his surroundings, the loved ones he had left behind, what they are doing, what they are saying. But as father time continues to move forward, Pierce's awareness dulls more and more, slowly and suffocating, darkness encroaching around him. It is on the last moments of the sixth day where his mind stops working, either having surrendered to its dark prison or succumbed, it is over.
(Archetype): Exchanged his life for that of Angeline Moreau using the Infernal Ether Mask.
(Archetype): Dragged into death with the final blow struck to Asmoday. Revived by Glenn McTavish applying his etheric mask artifact, and returned to the land of the living. (I got better!)
: He was killed in retaliation for the murder of Roger Colton by Roger's son, Caleb during the massacre at the Badlands Ranch.

Brought back as one of the undead to fight on behalf of Asmoday, the Coltons got to put him down a second time -- this time, for good.

: Killed in Leviathan's final attack on the banishers, her heart stopped in her chest before Leviathan is sent back to the Pit.
(Archetype): Jeremiah was dragged down to his death by Mudkins.
(Archetype): Colorado Colton. Town coward, occultist, gambler. Worst rancher in the state of Nevada. Betrothed to Sebastian Munson. Now a cracked statue of salt on the library floor.
: Went down with Jeremiah, faithful to the end. Probably kicked a few mudkin right in the thumbs on the way down and bit off many a finger, too.
(Archetype): Mortally wounded by Barbas during the banishing. Lived long enough to help banish Leviathan, dying from a self inflicted wound to create the final banishing sigil.

Still Needed!

Central Casting!

Because this is supposed to be a town with history, and where everybody knows everybody, I need help filling it in. Below is a list of roles for NPCs to fill, and for every one you make I'll give you 1GP at the start of the story, up to 3GP per player. GP will be harder to come by this story as explained above in the Kudos section, so this 3GP is going to come in handy. If you want to pick up one of the CC roles below, edit this section and put your Archetype in parentheses after it to show it's claimed. YOU create their bio and stats, just like creating an SR. You don't need to write a huge bio - what I wrote for the family heads is fine. When finished, let me know!

Any CC role that has NAME (Married Into) means that character will NOT have the family name, but some other name as their father (or grandfather, or...) married into that family. In these cases, you pick that surname, but do mention in their bio that they are a part of the Blooded family. Also note than none of these are intended to be THE only/favorite/best of a profession, and are not competition for your own roles. They are meant to be available if an Archetype or role goes unplayed or is unavailable.
