Project Icarus

In 2231, an anomaly in space was identified - an asteroid that is slowing down the closer it gets to KV-273, a black hole. Initially discovered on a deep space scan for precious Rare Earths, the asteroid was found to contain the largest concentration ever found anywhere in our galaxy. Scientists mapped its trajectory in preparation for an expedition and found it heading directly at KV-273 at staggering speed. Frustration set in as they wrestled with the physics of getting to it before it gets too close to the singularity, but then something truly impossible happened: it slowed down.

At its current rate of decline, it will come to a full stop before crossing the event horizon, something that simply should not be happening. They have dubbed this asteroid Icarus.

Having determined that Icarus is stable and has a strong gravity well, a series of probes were sent, followed by a manned mission in 2244. What initially started as a mining mission has become much bigger as the secrets behind Icarus' existence could rewrite physics as humanity knows it. That first manned mission ended in disaster as the small crew fell victim to some sort of mania. Penumbra Corp, the megacorp behind the Icarus Project, are convinced that they have isolated the cause of that madness and solved a number of other issues the first mission struggled with, and have launched a second mission.

You're set to enter the Icarus gravity well and awaken from stasis in 2249.

June 1st, 2249 - Arrival

(June 1, 2019)

Stasis. A blank, empty sleep. The jump to light speed requires it for a myriad of reasons, but that jump only takes a few minutes to travel lightyears. Where stasis really comes in handy is the long, slow, boring part of travel - leaving and entering solar systems, where basic physics keep speed to a point that it takes weeks or more to leave or enter them. Stasis saves on food and supplies.

Everyone entered stasis once the ship passed the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It's been empty, black sleep ever since. Three weeks to leave the solar system, a few days to the jump point, and then a matter of minutes to cross space from Sol to the asteroid's pre-set jump point. Once in range of the asteroid's gravity well, everyone is supposed to be woken up, take their stations, and settle in for approach and landing.

In theory.

Everyone awakens to klaxxons and explosions and violent shaking of the ship. It's like they're being hammered by asteroids and everything's coming apart. Blaring over all of it is a single statement from the ship's computer, on a loop:

"EVENT HORIZON PROXIMITY WARNING."

The science and research teams are rudely awoken to the sound of the klaxons and struggle to brace themselves for impact when the ship crash lands. At that same time, the Mining team comes out of stasis to find that things have gone horribly wrong.

The Heads of Staff are called to Dr. Aergio's lab where they discuss their findings on what exactly happened earlier. Each department is given a task to do.

Meanwhile, Conor tends the wounded.

Strange events are afoot in the Cultural Lab. (Where is this log?)

(Radio Chatter Log, Day One)

Anita clears Angel for duty. They then team up to convince Harkaway to accept needed medical treatment.

Various people seek libations and/or inspiration in Blaise's office. Some even find what they're looking for.

(June 3, 2019)

The Director's finally freed from her pod! But she's probably had better mornings.

Angel talks to Braden about the anomaly.

Mads brings Sebastian a mystery. Also she wants him to look into the message and the script used to write it.

Various people chat in the rec room and then things go rather sideways.

A meeting in the Chaos Theory lab leads to more chaos. You'd think they'd all see that coming...

June 4th, 2249 - Day Four

Many people descend on the Engineering office again, demonstrating the laws of unintended consequences, unsafety in numbers, and the scientific proof of the theory of the preservation of beverages.

After leaving the group to let Nyka cool down, earlier interrupted plans are essentially picked up. (Possibly NSFWish)

June 5th, 2249 - Day Five

(June 5, 2019)

Harkaway is off to get his check-up with Anita and runs into Bosch on the way.

The crew gets their first look at the Icarus I through the lens of a drone. They get a whole lot more than they're expecting.

Samantha stops by to check on Mads.

June 6th, 2249 - Day Six

(June 6, 2019)

A gathering in the science research department focuses on what the direction of the mission should be, going forward.

If the mimics mirror what they mimic, clearly the answer is memorizing everyone's asymmetrical identifying marks! This is only logical.

Security Chief Emory North pulls in Chief of Medical Conor Dunn to brief him on the events of the drone exploration and discuss the situation with Doc MacLeod and "Sinclair" as well as how to try not to make a mistake and fuck things up even worse.

Security Chief North sits the infiltrator-impostor down to ask some important questions like "Who the hell are you really", and "Why shouldn't I arrest you?"

Angel Ocasio and Dr. Hal Lockwood feel each other out.

Angel, Braden and Harkaway consider the puzzle.

Security officers Rambeau and Shepard review security footage at the end of the shift and discuss the weirdest of the current events. Paranoia increases, old wounds are poked.

Angel and Jazz catch up. Jazz asks Angel a very important question. He says yes.

People meet in the Rec Room. A miner has questions for the Director.

More people hit the Rec Room. Just how did Harkaway get hurt? Blaise has theories.

June 9th, 2249 - Day Nine

(June 11 & 12, 2019)

The Chief of Engineering drops in on the Director with news -- good, bad, and ugly.

A cryptic message is delivered to the window of the Science labs.

Malcolm and Lockwood discuss neurology vs. psychology, among other things.

Sebastian comes to Father Riordan with disturbing information, and the priest shares some of his own with the linguist. They come to some conclusions.

Blaise and Nyka discuss what they've been working on to get the ship out of here, and what neither of them are ready to see the other do.

Father Riordan sends confidential messages to several department heads.

Director Davies had some concerns she needed to speak about with the heads of the Mining Department. She then informs them of the upcoming mission to send a crew over to Icarus I.

The blows of the day need a little cushioning in the Engineering office. Hilarity and meowing ensue.

After the chaos in the engineering office, quiet settles in over the Chaos Theory Lab.

June 10th, 2249 - Day Ten

(June 13 & 14, 2019)

Security Chief North lets Rambeau and Shepard in on some need to know information after they ask some pointed questions involving the MacLeods.

The MacLeod brothers catch up and share new intel, some truths, assurances, and get a plan together to get KJ out of trouble.

A party of eight sets forth on a perilous quest across the rock of storms, beneath the eye of George the Unblinking, George the Ever-Watching, George the Devourer of Worlds, to retrieve the scrubbers of Icarus and bring them safely home.

Working on an initial array of options in the wake of the core discovery, Blaise and Nyka become victims of a shelvalanche.

Mads comes to tell Samantha about the missing engine core.

Angel comes by the Chaos Theory Lab to follow up on rumors regarding the latest contact from the alien intelligence. Nyka provides her account, and a bargain is struck.

Malcolm hunts his partner down to compare and contrast ideas about the data feed and some Special Project that's not explained on books.

June 11th, 2249 - Day Eleven

(June 15 & 16, 2019)

Discipline is had, and a quick catch up is made, not exactly a complete one.

Shepard and Malcolm play a game of cat and mouse. Who is what is entirely subjective.

A case is made for sharing information across departments.

Harkaway asks Samantha's opinion on further open sharing of information, and updates her about Science projects.

NCOs notice things.

Harlow comes looking for Malcolm for a new assignment. He and Shepard share training vs. coping with fear and weird shit. Mal and Harlow find common ground trying to care for remote persons in need of medical care. No one runs out of coffee. That's the important part of it all, right?

The Culture team weigh options.

Not all potential options are great options. Blaise, Nyka, and Thornton discuss details and data with Samantha in her office.

June 12th, 2249 - Day Twelve

(June 17 & 18, 2019)

Angel checks in with Alannah on how things are going in cultural. The conversation turns personal.

Angel drops in on Jazz to take her statement and make two requests: one official, one unofficial.

Ronnie comes to apologise to Samantha.

Angel checks on Teller.

Finally taking a moment or two of down time, Emory shares a drink and a few words with Jamie as Jamie works on adjusting his arm.

"Sinclair" breaks into the Priest's office in an act that turns out to be an audition for a job. Bloody hell.

Angel stops by Braden's to see how he's doing and play a little cards.

June 13th, 2249 - Day Thirteen

(June 19 & 20, 2019)

Ulysses has finally come to his senses! Blaise and Nyka possibly follow suit.

(June 21 & 22, 2019)

Malcolm comes clean to Shepard and asks a favour.

Braden and Angel discuss engine options and existential angst until the shit hits the fan on Icarus One.

The Chaos lab is in its usual chaos when things start to shake, rattle, and roll. (Radio chatter included.)

Somewhat after the shaking stops, Nyka brings Blaise a thermos of coffee, a bag of lunch, and a picnic spot. For once, pretending everything's normal loses out to the hard work of starting to get things right.

The Director, Chief of Security, Chief of Medical, Chief of Engineering, Mining Operation Head, and a couple of other staff discuss whether to see or not to see the alien writing and city, whether to blow the rock and go, or attempt to wipe out the alien life on the rock.

Malcolm and Mira catch up for a much-needed talk, and reassurances are given.

June 15th, 2249 - Day Fifteen

(June 23 & 24, 2019)

During a discussion about recent mission events and personal matters, Angel and Mira realize they have more in common than they'd previously thought.

Angel and Sebastian get scanned for shadow things, information is shared, and some arbitration occurs.

Mira brings some heretofore unknown information to Director Davies about radiation seeping into the asteroid from the Endolith.

Down in the Research section, interns start setting up Nyka's 'murderboard', under her and Blaise's direction. Angel and Sebastian drop in; Nyka has some choice words for the latter.

June 16th, 2249 - Day Sixteen

(June 25 & 26, 2019)

Nyka and Blaise wake up to discover it's an anniversary, sort of.

North, Ocasio, and Shepard discuss the state of CMO McLeod and Ocasio's exposure.

Shepard comes to clear Malcolm of being an exposure risk and gets the 411 on what's happening. A clash of ideals ensues, as usual as two persons take different approaches to the same goal.

In the Rec Room, Mira, Braden, Angel, and Harkaway chat. Mira possibly makes a new friend?

Nyka and Angel discuss past, present, and future.

Blaise drops in on Harkaway, and they probably both wish he hadn't.

June 17th, 2249 - Day Seventeen

(June 27 & 28, 2019)

Nyka drops by to bring Blaise lunch. Unfortunately, comfort food only works if they actually eat it.

That night, Mads comes by the Rec Room to share news with Angel, Sebastian, and Harkaway. Horrifying new findings lead to horrifying new findings.

June 18th, 2249 - Day Eighteen

(June 29 & 30, 2019)

Samantha reaches out to find the status of the Weyland Yutani ship after scans of it. Her sympathy surfaces and she makes what is likely going to be a mistake.

Samantha tells the Security Chief about her conversation with the WY ship and what she has suggested.

It's a sure sign the stress is getting to the crew when a respectable evening of shenanigans is derailed by science and intermittent naps, pursued by a waltz to Metallica and a sharpie.

June 25th, 2249 - Day Twenty-Five

(July 13 & 14, 2019)

Kolvek and North discuss how all this seems way too easy. Is everything they do just playing into the Endolith's plan?

Once they're away, the real remaining core is detonated, triggering the other carefully laid explosives along with it and sending anything not atomized by the blast (and everything that was) deep into KV273...

Epilogue

Dr. Blaise di Mercurio (Archetype)

There are letters, written by hand. Several recordings. A few smaller items he's made, and the repair bots. Instructions for where and to whom these things should go: children, parents, siblings, friends.

These go home on Icarus One. He doesn't.

If not already, I hope someday you'll understand, says one of the recordings. We have to be certain this never gets free. I love you.

They watch as Icarus One lifts off, the thrusters pushing it from the surface; as it moves from fighting the asteroid's hold to fighting KV-273's. Everything they can do is done.

Every thing but one.

He settles his finger against the button and the forehead of his EVA suit's helmet against hers, closing his eyes.

I love you, he says again.

Then everything is heat and light and gone.

Jamie MacLeod (Archetype)

Escaped aboard the Icarus 1.

Jasper Bloom (Archetype)

"I love you Brae, Ben, live long..."

Nyka Kolvek di Mercurio (Archetype)

'The Primer', the collection of writings and observations from the Kolvek clan from the beginnings in the mid-1920s, was sent along to the di Mercurio family. That there was no need to send word to her own when the mission returns without her or her twin, she knew, would say all that was required.

The Year Is 2249...

Mankind has spread out across dozens of systems with megacorps being the true powers of civilization. Jump Points allow FTL travel between the stars, but travel within each star system is confined by the usual laws of physics - it may take only minutes to get ten lightyears, but a month or more to get out of a system's gravity well to jump and another month or more from the edge of the destination system to the actual world or station. Stasis chambers are used to save on supplies and let travelers hibernate during the trip. Humanity's complicated history with artificial life (synthetic humans) has come to an end, and all such androids have been decommissioned and outlawed. It's 100 years after the events of Alien: Mutation.

Once again you work for Penumbra Corporation or are affiliated with it. You are a part of Project Icarus, a mission to a far-off asteroid headed for the black hole KV-273. Your reasons and missions may vary, but you're going to have to work together to get there and back safely.

Penumbra Corporation

Penumbra.jpg

In an era of megacorp domination, Penumbra is widely considered to be one of the good guys. They're still a corporate entity out to make a profit at the end of the day, but they have a higher standard of ethics than most. A good public image is good for business. What this means for your characters is that they are not like, say Weyland-Yutani, where people are just another expendable resource. They make their share of mistakes and bad decisions, but they didn't send you out to die in the name of profit and research. When the stony begins they truly believe they've addressed the problems with the first mission and have no knowledge of the true danger and evil that awaits you.

The Icarus Project

Certain elements collectively known as Rare Earths are integral to much of modern technology, and that was the simple starting point for what has turned out to be a mind-bending mystery and unprecedented mission named Project Icarus. The first matter of importance is the breathtaking concentration of these elements in the asteroid. A single year of mining would yield enough resources to make Penumbra the richest megacorp in the galaxy. That alone makes this mission worth almost any imaginable cost.

But why is it so concentrated in this one, lone asteroid? The more the company researched and investigated, the more questions they had instead of answers. The asteroid is on a direct course for KV-273, almost like it was hurled straight into it from an unknown origin, and as it nears it has started slowing down. Soon it will have stopped completely, hovering just beyond the event horizon. It has its own gravity and does not spin or rotate, making the side facing away from the black hole a continuously blasted, pockmarked wasteland of destruction as it pulls in debris headed for KV-273. As for the other side...

The side facing KV-273 is safe and stable, but the very sight of a black hole looming overhead is thought to be a large part of what drove the first mission crew mad. For this reason the ship-turned-station you're in has no windows that give a view of the black hole, and all outside operations are to be conducted by remote drone. The initial base, while less than a mile away, is also off-limits.

The Mining Mission

There are essentially three aspects to Project Icarus - locating and mining the Rare Earths, determining the reasons behind the asteroid's impossible existence and situation, and figuring out exactly what happened to the initial mission.

None of this can happen without the mining and exploration team.

This group is made of rugged, deep-space cowboys, the kind of people who spend most of their lives on cramped stations orbiting gas giants or on rocks much like Icarus. They do long hauls, extended tours, and live for the the rush of danger and the promise of money. They don't care why Icarus is, what Icarus is, or how it got to be here - they care about drilling into it and getting filthy rich. They came to drill to the core and explore what's inside, bring back the Rare Earths, and maybe retire on a beach somewhere.

For them, this is about doing the job, living the adventure, and making money.

The Research Mission

Icarus presents far more questions than answers, and each answer only seems to pose more questions. A group of scientists and academics are included in the mission to try to get to the heart of the mystery, not just the asteroid. Some are scientists, trying to work out the physics (and lack thereof) that make Icarus do what it's doing. Others aren't so sure there's a scientific explanation, but something deeper.

There are reasons to think that Icarus is not a natural phenomenon, but something created by an advanced intelligence. Such a concentration of Rare Earths is unprecedented, as is the fact that the 'asteroid' is basically hovering in front of a black hole. What if there's far more to things than the surface shows? Archeologists, anthropologists, even language and religious experts have been recruited to find signs of life or intelligence behind the mystery.

The Security and Investigation Mission

The company also wants answers to what exactly happened to the initial mission. They have a series of increasingly disturbing video observation and research entries, but much of it was scrambled in transmission by the proximity to KV-273. The original, hopefully uncorrupted files should still be there, and while it's been made clear that the first station is strictly off-limits to crew, it can be accessed by remote drone. Retrieving those files and exploring the base remotely is a top priority.

Keeping everyone safe in all parts of the project and preventing a repeat of what happened before is also important.

Roles

There are essentially five 'types' of roles this story spread over three missions in the project.

Mining and Exploration - A good fit for physical characters, adventurers, and so on. Plenty of danger, lots of chances for heroics and craziness.

Science Research - A good fit for brainy characters and those who shy away from lots of Kill Scenes and danger. No job/role is SAFE of course. Will be crucial in any attempts to 'science this shit' when things go sideways and you need to stay alive.

Cultural/Intelligence Research - A good fit for social characters, those who like to ask questions and challenge ideas. Also more brainy/less action. Less crucial to survival but essential to unlocking the secret of the story.

Internal Investigation - A good fit for leadership types, unusual types and black sheep. They'll get a good mix of danger and mystery and be involved in making the big decisions. Will have reason to overlap with all groups.

Security - A good fit for combat types, protectors and grunts. Will be crucial to survival long-term and has a reason to overlap with every aspect.

Having more than one you're open to is ideal and allows me flexibility.

Begin by making a Role page from your Archetype page via the form button and choose a last name for your character to name it. Select 'Icarus' for Story. For now, only list your ideas for roles on this character/role page so I can see what thoughts you all have.

Accomodations

With space being extremely tight and important on the ship/base, sleeping and personal accomodations aren't ideal. Everyone gets a sleep chamber, often called a coffin by crew, which is a compartment the size of a twin size bed built into a wall. It can close completely, allowing privacy, is relatively comfy, and has a 12" display overhead that can play various entertainment or play and record video messages.

These are clustered together in circular rooms by mission: Mining, Research and Investigative. One half of the circle has your coffins, the other has your lockers where your clothing and personal items are kept. Baths and showers are also communal and divided by mission, not sex. Issues of privacy and nudity are no longer considered problems in this era.

Project Icarus: Mining Mission

The mining mission of Project Icarus is focused on the high concentration of Rare Earths scans indicate are at the asteroid's core. As this is a core drill, the mining team will spend most of its time manning the drill room until the core is reached. The drill itself is huge and run by computers, but requires regular monitoring and maintenance. Drill bits need replacing regularly. The shaft being dug gets reinforcing each time the drill is retracted for bit replacement. Sometimes explosives and other equipment and techniques are needed when a particularly difficult spot is hit. There's a lot to be done to make what will end up being a 15 mile tunnel straight down to the core.

Sure there's more excitement around the mysteries of the asteroid's existence, but the mining mission is what will pay the bills and make everyone rich.

Project Icarus: Research (Science) Mission

The asteroid itself is an impossibility, and yet there it is. Penumbra has brought in scientists from a range of fields and assigned them to the scientific side of the research mission. This group of some of the best minds in the galaxy have a daunting task ahead of them as they try to determine how the asteroid is breaking the very laws of physics, or if everything we think we know is wrong. Getting answers to the fundamental questions surrounding the asteroid could open entire new avenues of scientific exploration.

Those on the science side are all company employees, entirely in-house. Penumbra dare not let outside scientists in on such a groundbreaking project.

Project Icarus: Research (Culture) Mission

There is, of course, another possibility in all of this - the asteroid may be the work of an advanced intelligence. There are a number of circumstantial signs that point to this theory, and so the company is going in prepared for the possibility that humanity has at last found signs of intelligent life.

Many of the experts brought into this side of the research mission are not company employees - Penumbra is an energy megacorp and has little need for anthropologists and archaeologists. As a result, these experts are going in mostly blind beyond the basics. They know about the asteroid and its unusual properties and have been told there are signs of a potential intelligent force behind it, but all details are being kept under wraps until landing. They're very much headed into the unknown.

Project Icarus: Investigative Mission

This is not the first manned mission to the asteroid, and that first mission ended abruptly and quite disturbingly. Few have been given any details, including the Investigative team sent to get answers, because the company doesn't know much, and what it does is just as mind-bending as the rest of the secrets of the asteroid. Due to its proximity to KV-273 all messages and broadcasts from the asteroid are distorted at best. Until a drone can enter the original base and secure the harddrives, no one will really know what happened. The limited data and footage that has been unscrambled will only be made available after landing.

Because of the nature of the project and the questions surrounding the first mission, a security team is accompanying the mission to protect the integrity of the project first and foremost, and all of those on the mission second.

Sanity Levels

This story features an element I'm calling Sanity Levels - it has nothing to do with mental illness and should not be considered as analogous. It's a marker to track a character's grip on their own mind and reality. The more a character sees and experiences Things That Shouldn't Be, the more they begin to unravel. Their mind opens up to the Horrors, losing control to Them. At a certain point, the character loses all autonomy and becomes Their servant.

Spirit Checks (similar to Freak-Out Checks) are made when presented with these Things. We'll call them Sanity Checks. Unlike Freak-Out, they do not cause you to lose an action, but instead drop you further into Their control. It's not about being frightened or startled, but having your mind broken. There are no Qualities that help or hinder these rolls, no bonuses or negatives, and you cannot spend GP on them.

All characters start at Sanity Level 0. Each failed check raises you one level, where you stay for the duration of the story. Each level has consequences and effects that impact your character, and they are listed below.

Level -1: Above human normal. Your mind is a fortress. (See Perks, must be bought)

Level 0: Normal.

Level 1: Splintered. The first cracks are showing. You hear whispers at random times and have a -1 to rolls involving concentration.

Level 2: Fractured. An opening has presented itself. The Horrors can now sometimes see through your eyes and hear through your ears. Your secrets are not your own. You will occasionally get visions from TD. The whispers are louder, and you're still at -1 to rolls involving concentration.

Level 3: Receptive. The Horrors can make you do things from time to time. At TD's discretion, you take an action They want instead of what you planned. This cannot be resisted. In addition, They can see and hear through you at will, and the whispers can be deafening at random times (TD's discretion), making any action -1.

Level 4: Unhinged. You are a puppet of the Horrors, now. While you can keep playing, TD can Direct you at any time.

While you can see each others' sheets, there is no way to tell IC how far gone another person is, and you won't ICly know that They can see and hear through you unless discovered IC. Please keep these things in mind!

Rules Changes

I'm testing some new GP rules this story in an effort to make the game more dangerous. These changes are listed below.

  • You may only spend 1GP for a +1 to a roll once per round/action. If you're re-rolling, you can't do it again.
  • You may only spend 3GP for a re-roll once per scene.

In addition to the above, your first/free failure in any Kill Scene cannot put you into negatives (except by Surprise!), but it CAN cost you SP. You just won't drop below 0. Failed rolls in general can cost you SP even if not being attacked, but only an attack can put you in negatives (kill you).

Basically, fighting is a worse idea than usual this story.

Perks and Quirks

You get 50pts in Perks for 50pts in Quirks. There are no freebies this story.

Perks

10 Point Perks
Good Luck

Re-roll 1 die. Once per Scene. You must select which die you wish to reroll.

Adrenaline Boost

Can add an additional +1 die. Once per Scene.

Area of Expertise

Your college education or extracurricular activities give you an edge in a specific field. Can add an ADDITIONAL +1 to a Brains or Finesse roll once per scene in that field.

20 Point Perks
Found Item

At a crucial moment in the story, you can find an object or item you desperately need. Can only be used once per story.

Steel Yourself

Use before a Freak-Out Check to automatically succeed once per Scene for 3GP.

Versatile

Use a Positive quality in a tagential (other) Stat Check once per Scene.

Useful Tech

You can have one item to start that isn't just a simple personal belonging. Examples might be a motion tracker, a flashbang grenade, a door jack, a mineral scanner, a stun baton, etc. For Project Icarus it cannot be a firearm. Only security carries them.

30 Point Perks
Let's End This

Double SP gain on a Stat Check that has a Matched Set. Once per scene for 3GP.

Back for More

If put in negatives, roll 1d6. On a 4-6, stay at 1 SP and continue. Once per scene for 3GP (if successful).

50 Point Perks
Iron Mind

You have a mind of steel and start with an extra Sanity Level: -1.

Quirks

10 Point Quirks
Reputation

Deserved or not, you got a bad rep, and it follows you. -1 Spirit on your first social roll once per scene. Others are encouraged to RP your reputation with and around you.

Two Left Feet

You're clumsy, and your first athletic-type Finesse roll in any scene is at -1. You are encouraged to RP it beyond this.

Small Favor

You owe someone else in your group a small debt.

20 Point Quirks
Faint Hearted

You have to make Freak-Out checks at any bloody or gruesome sight, not just when freaky things happen. Failure leads to the character passing out cold.

Big Favor

You owe someone else a big debt.

Company Outsider

You're not Penumbra, but an outside expert in your field brought in on Project Icarus to advise. You may not be given the whole picture or trusted with the entire truth. You're Need To Know.

30 Point Quirks
Doomed

You're going to die in a horrible way. When the time comes for your character, no rolls are made, no GP can be spent. Your time is up.

Corporate Lackey

You're on thin ice with the company, or indebted to them, and must follow orders to the letter. They say jump, you ask how high.

50 Point Quirks
Fragile Mind

You have a weakened grip on reality, perhaps due to previous trauma, and start the game at Sanity Level: 1.

Supporting Roles

Supporting roles are limited this story to one per Archetype. The crew isn't massive. SRs get no Perks or any other bonuses this story, and should be seen as pure redshirts.

Genre Points

Players can earn 2GP a week this story by posting video journal entries on their wiki pages. Obviously these are text/written, a one-person scene. Simply put a '/journal' after your wiki page and tell it to 'create this page'. You must post at least two a week to get the GP. These are IC thoughts/musings/ramblings of your character on the events in-game.

(2019-04-25 • Tiny Apartment) Mira and Teller are finally in the same place, at the same time. Teller breaks the rules to bring the feels.

(Archetype): Jazz went with Samantha, Angel, and the rest on the mission so the others could escape. Laying explosives as she could so they could blow this horror into the black hole where it belonged once their family was free. It was all noble and grand. But her death? It was a horrible thing that seemed to last centuries to her as her mind and body were warped and twisted in ways she can't even explain. And remembers only in nightmares in the Facility. The wonders of what a thing like the Endolith could pull.
(Archetype): No monologue. No rant. No 'I told you so' screamed into the dark. No tears, fear, or quaking. Just a quiet whisper in echo, then blinding light. The last flicker of a thought: That seems about right.
(Archetype): Played distraction and bait, leading the synthetic to Icarus Two. Likely lost her grip on her sanity after being assaulted by the alien writing over there. Died when the asteroid exploded.
(Archetype): Died fighting Bates, the synth so that the others could get away.
(Archetype): Stayed behind along with Nyka to ensure the core-bomb was properly set up and nothing impeded them detonating it to make absolutely sure the asteroid was properly exploded, endolith city and all.

George The Black Hole
Jun 08, 2019 The Director

Among the various video footage being reviewed is one clip that's been passed around like a viral video. There's nothing bad in it, or sensitive, so the powers that be don't seem upset the everyone has seen it. It's of a few grunts, very early on, discussing the idea of working EV out under KV-273.

Grunt 1: I'm not looking forward to going out there when things need fixing. I don't like being stared at.

Grunt 2: Stahlhut won't loom over your shoulder. I've worked with him before.

Grunt 1: I'm not talking about Stahlhut. I mean George.

Grunt 2: George? Who's George?

Grunt 1: You know, big hangry mouth in the sky? It needed a name. KV-273 is too long.

Grunt 2: But why George? KV... Why not Kevin?

Grunt 1: Doesn't look like a Kevin.

End clip.
