God's Away on Business - Tom Waits

I'd sell your heart to the junkman

Baby, for a buck, for a buck

If you're looking for someone

To pull you out of that ditch

You're out of luck, you're out of luck

Ship is sinking

The ship is sinking

The ship is sinking

There's leak, there's a leak, in the boiler room

The poor, the lame, the blind

Who are the ones that we kept in charge?

Killers, thieves, and lawyers

God's away, God's away

God's away on business

Business

God's away, God's away

God's away on business

Business

Digging up the dead with a shovel and a pick

It's a job, it's a job

Bloody moon rising with a plague and a flood

Join the mob, join the mob

It's all over, it's all over, it's all over

Hell - Squirrel Nut Zippers

In the afterlife

You could be headed for the serious strife

Now you make the scene all day

But tomorrow there'll be Hell to pay

People listen attentively

I mean about future calamity

I used to think the idea was obsolete

Until I heard the old man stamping his feet.

This is a place where eternally

Fire is applied to the body

Teeth are extruded and bones are ground

Then baked into cakes which are passed around.

Beauty, talent, fame, money, refinement

Top skill and brain

But all the things you try to hide

Will be revealed on the other side.

Now the D and the A and the M

And the N and the A

And the T and the I-O-N

Lose your face, lose your name

Then get fitted for a suit of flame

Ghost of Stephen Foster - Squirrel Nut Zippers

Met the Ghost of Stephen Foster at the Hotel Paradise

This is what I told him as I gazed into his eyes:

Rooms were made for carpets,

Towers made for spires,

Ships were made for cannonade fire off from inside them.

Gwine to run all night Gwine to run all day Camptown ladies never sang all the doo dah day no, no, no.

Met the Ghost of Stephen Foster at the Hotel Paradise

This is what I told him as I gazed into his eyes:

Ships were made for sinking,

Whiskey made for drinking,

If we were made of cellophane, we'd all get stinking drunk quite faster ha, ha, ha.

Sticky Jazz - Shriekback

Surya Namaskar like a little lizard in the sun

Take as much as you need;

There's enough for everyone

Living for the night-time

Taking the bandage from the eyes

Hanging with the moth-men:

Everybody's favorite disguise.

All the little background noises

All the little children sing

Fiddle with the wooden Jesus

It's a special kind of thing

All the little background noises

All the little children sing

All the little Greek-boys know

There is a time for everything

DO-DO THE CRUEL IMMERSION

DO-DO THE FLAMING TONGUE

DO-DO THE HOLY MASH-UP

(SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE)

DO-DO THE FIERY FURNACE

DO-DO THE STICKY JAZZ

DO-DO THE HOLY MOTION

(WE WANT WHAT EVERYBODY HAS)

Captain Cook - Shriekback

Captain Cook said:

"We bring the gospel of the one true god.

We bring you medicine and video games.

We bring the language of the English queen.

We bring you alcohol and MTV.

We bring you syphilis and organized crime.

We bring you cinema and chemical war.

We bring the poison of our factory minds.

We bring the terror of the passing of the time."

And the Chief said to Captain Cook,

"Who are you?"

The Captain said, pointing as his own breast, said,

"Friend."

And the Chief did not understand.

So the Captain pointed out to sea at our vessel,

And said,

"Ship."

And still the Chief did not understand.

So the Captain pointed at a musket, and said,

"Gun."

And the Chief said "Gun," and smiled.

And the word, the word,

The word caught fire in the Chief's mind.

The word caught fire in the Chief's mind

And splintered into a thousand other words

For which he had no meaning.

Words for machines that flew

Into the night behind the stars,

The great cities made of metal and glass,

And new kinds of death.

And the chief's head was spinning

With this new language,

And he could no longer remember his own tongue,

And he began to weep.

He said,

"I don't,

I don't want to know your language, white man."

And Captain Cook said:

"Nothing you know can be unlearned,

None of your bridges be unburned.

The new words stick in the brain forever,

No one stays stupid while someone's clever.

We're transmitting, you receive.

This is the software - do you believe?"

And the Chief talked to his people,

There as the waves lapped upon the beach.

And the Captain waited,

Knowing that nothing could forestall

The tide of history coming in over the heads

Of these simple and beautiful folk.

And when the Chief turned to Captain Cook

And said,

"We will do battle with you, then, white man,

And you will have to kill us all."

Captain Cook just smiled and said,

"We're not here to fight you, Chief.

No, we're here to transmit a virus.

We're here to transmit a virus called the future.

A virus called the future.

Called the future,

Called the future,

Called the future."

"Civilization is Syphilisation,

And yesterday's reason is today's superstition.

There are new receivers and a new transmission.

We're here to pass on this information:

The language/virus inculcation."

"The Prophets and Madmen sing their songs:

'Nobody right-nobody wrong.'

This is our message--

Pass it on.

Pass it on.

Pass it on... "

Hymn to the Local Gods - Shriekback

Where are the bones and the flowers?

Where are the shrines to the local gods?

They never write now or ring us

Whatever happened to the local gods?

What are their names? Where do they live now?

Where do we go to light a candle to them now?

They held the soul of the city

The streets were bright with the local gods

The days were sweet with their meanings

The nights were vivid with the local gods

The day they left we never saw their going

We woke one morning and the world was less than it had been

In the canals and the wastelands

Up in the spires, under the flyovers

Still you can see, with the right eyes,

The shining presence of the local gods

Stand in the silence you can hear them whisper

Hearing their laughter echo in the steel and stone

So leave a fire in the window

Pour the wine under the underpass

Let's all go down to the river

We'll go swimming with the local gods

They never died we only lost their number

All you can find here worship and more will appear

In the beginning, man created the gods to help explain the universe and make sense of it. They were born of belief and given power through it. Now the age of reason looms, and as man unlocks the secrets of the universe with science, he stands on the verge of creating a false sun and usurping the gods he created.

These are the last days of magic and wonder, the end of times for the gods man no longer needs.

Of Gods and Monsters

"The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination." - Albert Einstein

The most powerful thing in the world is belief. Man is a cunning animal, but it's his imagination that sets him apart. The things born of human imagination become real and take on a life of their own. God didn't create man.

Man dreamed of god.

When man left Europe for the new world, he brought his gods with him. When he enslaved other men from Africa and brought them over, they brought their gods, too. And as they decimated the indigenous peoples of the land, their gods died with them. Immigrants and slaves, natives and migrants, they all have their beliefs.

You are their gods and monsters.

When Scandinavians left Sweden and Norway for Minnesota and Wisconsin, Odin and Thor didn't travel with them. Instead, new versions of them sprouted in America. For this reason the Odin of America is not the Odin of Norway, but he has his history, his memories and personality. What came before America is only history, however. It wasn't them. Their life and experiences started here, and the Odin of the new world is different than the one in Norway. So it is with every god and monster, every creature of mythology and magic brought here by immigrants.

The native gods, however, are the originals, and they're dying. Their people pushed to the brink of extinction, they already live in the last days. They already know the truth that the others will soon learn:

Magic is dying. Man has usurped the gods they created to explain the mysteries of existence. These are the end times for beings of wonder.

You can play either a dying god or a forgotten creature, both beings of imagination in a world that's embracing science. You are a shadow of your former self, barely more than a mortal, and you eke out what little worship and awe you can to survive. Whether deity or beast, being forgotten is the worst death of all.

Running Away with the Circus

Over the years at the start of the 20th century, gods and monsters began joining the traveling shows that toured America, performing for crowds and basking in the brief adulation. They'd been largely abandoned by the people who gave them life over the centuries prior, and this gave them a new form of belief, a shorter but headier hit of awe and wonder. The crowds watching them saw glimpses of magic, but before any risk could arise from such brazen displays, they moved on to the next show, the next town. It became a way to survive, and even to thrive again. The Roaring 20's were magical days, and for a time they thought their fortunes were changing.

The Great Depression brought all that to a stark, jarring halt. The Dust Bowl made it worse.

Now the people are starving, the land is blighted and dying, and the gods and monsters can barely hold on. Between early 1930 and the game's beginning in late 1934, they all consolidated under one banner: The Carnival of Wonders. Every marquee performer is either god or beast, and much of the crew is as well. Those mortals who work and travel with the show know what they live among, and are some of the precious few true believers left. In the darkest of times, even one or two faithful can keep a dream alive a little longer. You are the gods and monsters that make up the Carnival of Wonder, and those mortals are your Supporting Roles. Use them wisely - you need them.

Life as a Carnie

This is not your average carnival.

In carnie terms, there's trade and there's rubes. Trade are fellow carnies, those who live the life of a traveling performer, conman, grifter and more. Trade knows the rules of the road and lives by a complex and obscure code of conduct. Honor amongst thieves. In this carnival, however, those thieves are gods and creatures of myth and legend.

In this carnival, rubes are more than just the yokels who come to the shows, the marks the carnies fleece. A rube is any mortal that doesn't realize the way the world truly is.

The world isn't friendly to magic anymore, fear and suspicion are strong as the world suffers through the turmoil leading up to World War II. Simply doing the incredible can get an angry mob on your heels in a blink, and you're no longer invincible. Performing in the carnival allows you a way to be who and what you truly are in a setting where the rubes are expecting the unbelievable. It's a safe place and means of flaunting your powers and getting adulation for it. Then you move on to the next town before people get too suspicious.

It's a life on the road, of living in trailers and tents, of having no true place to call home. Sometimes the money and awe is good, and you eat well and sleep peacefully. More often than not, it isn't and you don't. Still, you make the best of it.

Everyone Carries Their Weight

There are no free rides and no free meals in showbiz, and the carnival is no exception. Everyone has a job to do, whether being in the biggest spotlight digging latrines. Below are all the different angles you can play.

Big Top

Most shows don't have one, can't support one, but the Carnival of Wonders can. All of the biggest performers end up here, where they get the biggest crowds and biggest rewards in the form of adulation.

Private Stages and Tents

The up-and-comers that start out in the ten-in-one and move up to midway stages dream of the big top, but many only make it here. A show of your own, secluded and private means more money and attention, and for many performers it's not a bad life. Snake charmer, feats of strength, freaks and geeks with a good gimmick, etc.

Midway Side Stages

Small platform stages line the midway, the heart of any carnival, and while you perform for free you have a decent shot at tips and crowds. These performers are newer or less popular, unable to draw good crowds or put on lengthy shows, but often good for a quick flash. Sword swallowers and fire eaters, rubber men and one-trick geeks or freaks, jugglers, etc.

Ten in One

It gets a lot of traffic - see ten acts for the price of one! - but it means little money and struggling with nine others for tips. The newest acts and bottom-rung performers cycle through here with turns on the midway side stages as well.

Ballies and Talkers

Performing isn't for everyone, nor is it something every god and monster can do. Storyteller types, tricksters, conmen, they do well as a bally or talker - those that lure people into shows and tents, narrate performances, help sell the magic.

Artisans and Vendors

Others have gifts of fortune-telling, or crafting, an art or skill they sell. Gods and monsters with such gifts generally work out of booths, tents or trailers.

Food, Rides and Games

While mostly mortals, a god of travel might find reward running the Ferris wheel, or a god of wine tending bar for the adults. Even a trickster god may get by running one of the many, oft-rigged, games of chance.

Adult Entertainers

The redlight tent. The burlesque show. The cooch tent. It has many names, but everyone knows what it is. Striptease, erotic art and performance, and even a full-service brothel, this is an area many gods and monsters find suits them.

Roustabouts

A carnival doesn't build itself. Mostly made of mortals, they are the crew that sets everything up, puts everything together, and makes sure it keeps running. Then they tear it all down and pack it up to do it again somewhere else. Gods and monsters tied to building, construction, and so on get powered by the carnival's success built with their hands.

The Circuit

The circuit usually has you North in the warmer months and South in the colder months, avoiding the extremes on both ends. Sometimes detours arise. Sometimes you just have to go somewhere at a specific time. It happens. For the most part, you stick to the circuit, though.

Management

Veles, Mephistopheles, or Mephisto the Magnificent (same being) is widely considered the boss of the carnival. It was he who started pulling you all together, and he who united you under your current banner. Meph, however, claims there is another being, something older and stranger than any of you that really calls the shots and put this all together.

Management.

No one's sure if there really is a Management to speak of. Meph is a demon or a trickster god depending on which version you believe, after all, so it wouldn't surprise anyone to learn that it's just him. Still, some say he's telling the truth, that something much older and more powerful is in that private trailer with him. But who or what is it?

The Laws of the Carnival

There are rules for being with any organization, and the Carnival of Wonders is no different. Their laws, however, are.

1. Belief is sacred. None shall harm those mortals and animals within the troupe who believe. (This basically means hurting, but especially killing, SRs is a big no-no. You gods and monsters can resurrect. Mortals and animals cannot, and they are your power.)

2. Secrecy is paramount. None shall feed or indulge in their darker natures on carnival grounds. (You don't shit where you eat. If you need to eat flesh, or kill mortals to sustain yourself, the killing happens off the grounds. It's too risky to do where crowds might see.)

3. All must carry their own weight. (Everyone, even believers, need to find a function within the carnival. There are no free rides.)

4. The lost may be found, but they will carry their weight. (Gods and monsters discovered along the way can be taken in, but they need to contribute quickly.)

5. Conflicts must be settled. Bad blood cannot be tolerated, or it will fester. (Got beef? Deal with it and shake hands. Figure out a challenge or way to settle things or they'll be settled for you.)

Edit Carnival Setting Page

Performers

The stars of the big top, side shows, and even the 10-in-1 are called Faces, and they are the celebrities of the show and biggest money makers.

Roustabouts

Roustabouts - rousties - are laborers and technicians, the sweat and muscle that makes the carnival happen.

Artisans, Craftsmen and Vendors

From the games, snacks and rides to the fortune tellers and artisans, these are the people that make the bread and butter money.

Providers of Adult Entertainment

There's a secondary performance tent, one that only allows adults. Some call it the burlesque show, others the cooch tent. These are the people that work it.

The Adoring Crowd

This is not a PC faction -- alternate archetype faces, central casting, supporting roles, and cultists only.

Followers, hangers-on, groupies, townies, and notable or interesting attendees of all types. These characters may not appear at all times, and may only be in certain locations along the way.

Cults of Personality

Many of the mythical beings in the Carnival have their own curious collections of hangers-on. This list links to all the character cults in the current story.

W2A2.png

The Mysterium (The Athlete)

Magic.

There is real magic in the world, and there has been for millions of years. The truest magic is most likely music. Beings so primitive that they cannot rightly be called man knew the power of war drums to show their power and inspire courage. They knew the power of song to soothe and heal. The oldest magic is that of life and death. The light inside of a human that is conceived in love and birthed in pain lives a while, kindling more such light before it passes beyond the veil. It seems these things have always existed, and with them the gods that mete out such things and express their favor or disfavor. As humanity has grown over the millennia, so too has magic. Laws define and regulate the action of thousands, or millions. Agriculture produces a bounty that feeds the growing tide. Religion carries the beliefs from one civilization to another, sometimes converting, but more frequently destroying in a tide of blood.

This is the warfare of the gods.
But not all gods are bloody, terrible gods. Some gods are gods of secrets and of knowledge. Gods of the mind and the body and the spirit.

The Mysterium is a small esoteric cult that knows that magic still lives in the world. They believe in the everyday magic of blood, sweat, and tears. They believe in the power of an oath. They believe that a white lie and a black lie are a form of control that anyone can cast, but inevitably come back upon the wielder. The Mysterium is primarily consists of the skilled workers and apprentices that follow the Thrice Great, known as Warren Dumont and in hushed whispers as Hermes. They tend to the tricks of the trade, oiling hinges, repairing props, and ensuring that the secrets of escape artistry and magic cannot be discerned from the audience. The truth is a powerful magic, and everyone who goes to see an escape artist wants to be deceived and amazed. They want to believe. It is, in a way, dishonest to give them something that they did not ask for. They do not want to know the secret of a trick, even as they try to figure out what it could be.

The difference between the audience and the Mysterium is this: the Mysterium knows that some escapes are impossible, and yet the Thrice Great manages them anyway.

BV3 Sun 01.jpg

The Iobacchoi (The Bon-Vivant)

It's a popular misconception that the cult of Dionysus is all about wine, women, and song. Not that there aren't plenty of all of the above, plus spirits, men, and dance besides. But those are as much symptoms as ends in themselves. The true core of the cult is freedom — the freedom of the chaos of nature, before and still beneath the strictures civilization placed upon humanity. Those who join the Iobacchoi are those who chafe under the restrictions and expectations placed on them by others and themselves — the rules imposed by family, society, church — and in every land it touches, his cult has provided some liberation for those marginalized by their society, whatever aspect of their identity might be the cause.

In the old days they attended him as members of his thiasus, now more often seen as an entourage (and, should he manage to hold out a few more decades, probably later to be groupies). Over the years, the ratio of nature spirits to simple mortals has shifted, as nymphs and maenads and satyrs found less and less belief to sustain them. These days, all but one member of the group are mortals, and that one lingers on the edge. [will finish this later, I've been failing at writing this sentence for ages now]

CompetitorCarnival01.jpg

All-American Big Boom Band (The Competitor)

A singer needs a band. And for Nikki Victor, that band is the 'All-American Big Boom Band'.

They are all devoted to Nikki, admirers and worshipers, and are all talented in their fields. Most are musicians, though there is also one dresser/set designer, and one bodyguard. As this is a big band, there is a horn section, drummer, upright bass, string quartet, guitarist, backing singer, and a couple of pianists.

HodrTF01.jpg

Children of a Lesser God (The Confidant)

To hear the story as told by Hodr, his is a story of betrayal, atonement and redemption.

Baldr, his twin brother, fell deathly ill. He'd been poisoned by Hodr's hand, but not his intent. Betrayal. While his brother lay on his deathbed, Hodr sought atonement. He'd seen the poison, but in his ignorance, he had not recognized it. So, Hodr blinded himself because what good was his sight anyway? Atonement. Baldr survived, against the odds, and Hodr's penance keeps him that way.

Today, he and his brother live on as gods on earth. Both weakened but, not for long. It is prophesied that after Ragnarok, Baldr, with Hodr at his side, will be rulers of the new world. Redemption.

That story may be the spark but what fuels the Children of a Lesser God is Hodr himself. He may be divine but he not some distant figure, lording over his subjects. Hodr is by your side, wherever you are. He takes the hand of each one of his believers and guides them through their own personal journey to redemption. Redemption from what? Anything. Hodr doesn't judge. He listens, he advises, he eases your burden and you leave better than you came.

The Children, by design, have a way of cycling in and out. Some get what they need quickly and never travel on or have to stay put until the Carnival comes 'round again. Others keep moving, working at the Carnival and carrying their weight, while lavishing Hodr with their adoration and love. The same love that each Child will swear Hodr gives back, double.

ExplorerCarnival.png

The Nymphai (The Explorer)

Homer, Odyssey 6. 102 ff (Greek epic C8th B.C.)
"Artemis far-shooting (iokheaira) ranges the mountainside — on lofty Taygetos, it may be, or it may be on Erymanthos — taking her pleasure among the boars and the running deer; Nymphai of the countryside (agronomoi), daughters of Zeus who holds the aigis, are all around her and share her pastime; Leto her mother is glad at heart. With head and forehead Artemis overtops the rest, and though all are lovely, there is no mistaking which is she."

Many are the legends that speak of Artemis and her retinue of nymphs, of mortal maidens and youths who accompanied her on her adventures. Though the vast majority of them have been lost to time, at least one or two have stuck. These are her most trusted companions, beloved by the goddess, and granted the most favor by her by far — especially now that she no longer holds the power to extend their lifespans any further.

Others have joined her band over the years. Often women, drawn by the sense of self-empowerment and freedom the goddess radiates and fosters in those who follow her. Some, rescued from unhealthy or abusive environments, lingered out of gratitude and a desire for continued protection. A few had the seeds of belief planted when 'Elene' helped speed their recovery from illness or injury, and stayed as those seeds flourished and grew with time spent in her presence.

And then there's Mal.

In any case, the Nymphai all share a few key commonalities. Loyalty. Zeal. And, perhaps most importantly to Artemis herself, sustaining faith.

Hanged Man.jpg

The Cult of Osiris (The Martyr)

Osiris is dead during the day and acts through his cult, which he built up during the boom time in the '20's. Several cult members, including his priest and priestess who came over from Egypt and Sudan with him work in the Carnival. Others come as visitors to watch the show when it travels through their area to worship in private rites.

Cult members take it in turn to protect and tend Osiris during the day when he is mostly defenseless.

MelCarnival2.png

Sleepwalkers (The Melancholic)

Over the years spent on the circuit, a multitude of personages have coalesced around Hypnos; on the occasions where they're seen outside of his tent and trailer most move listlessly, as though sleepwalking, and often have glassy eyes and distant looks that have earned them their name. Some of them are true believers. Others were simply found wanting of a purpose. Regardless of whatever brought them, they show little interest in leaving.

Whether bound to his will by choice, by coercion, or by the slavish yoke of need, the Sleepwalkers do Hypnos' bidding and tend to his needs and those of the carnival. While some are practically automatons, others retain much of their identity and sense of purpose. Some are docile, some are willful servants, and some yet struggle, but the Sleepwalkers -- and the myriad rumors that swirl around those that behave most strangely -- have become an indelible, idiosyncratic feature of the Carnival of Wonder.

RogueCoyote1.jpg

The People (a.k.a. Eyes & Ears) (The Rogue)

Coyote has been doing the circuit for a long time and in that time has watches his many children be forced off their lands. It is not that the People of the Land have forsaken him, it's that the People of the Land are being hunted to extinction and their way of life snuffed out. One by one Coyote has heard them call to him "Coyote, make us clever. Coyote find us a way!" and Coyote listened. on the circuit he's collected the diaspora of those born here first. Sometimes they stay long enough to find their family again. Sometimes they pass on into the Sun Lands, but always they are cherished by Grandfather Coyote.

At the Carnival they are on the Midway serving as Rousties, Security, and game operators. They are primarily Coyote's Eyes & Ears on the Midway and look for opportunity for him, and early signs of trouble to send up to Security. They will spot an easy mark for one of the performers, a pocket to pick, someone in need who wants to belief that needs to be sold a promise. They find the weak and the gullible. They find the lost and the wanting. Sometimes they find more of their own needing protection. Always they are watching. Always they are listening.

When the Boss says "Put some Eyes & Ears on that" this is who he's talking about, and Coyote is happy to have his People do just that.

Soldier2-Carnival1.png

The Followers of Mèng Pó (The Soldier)

This is a gathering of the uprooted, disenfranchised and disowned, of those perhaps hopeful that the next turn of the cycle will be more fortunate than it has been for this life. They came to seek the solace that Mèng Pó could provide, and for reasons that each call their own, they are the handful who decided to stay.

She is not a familiar deity to those who never grew up with stories of Dìyù and the brew of oblivion. As such virtually all of her believers in the United States are Chinese immigrants or their descendants. Still, there are some who have come to know her in other, less predictable ways.

Visionary1-CoW.png

The North Star (The Visionary)

They come for a variety of reasons. Some come and go. Others never leave.

In each case, in some way, Urania has changed the course of the life of each of her cultists in a profound manner, enough so that the strength of their faith in her transforms and sustains hers in turn.

Some fell in love with a beautiful woman -- or man -- and became obsessed. (They rarely last.) Others had warnings they needed at just the right time. Still others saw inspiration in her they found nowhere else.

On the surface, they are a rag-tag performance troupe, not unlike any other in the Carnival. They occupy a trio of trailers: one for Urania's personal lodgings and readings (as Selene or Twila), one that serves as dressing room and bunk space for the women, and a third to haul the gear and their private tent that serves as bunk space for the menfolk -- they often sleep on the roof when in transit. While they typically operate as a relatively self-contained unit, and the bulk of their activity is focused on the group, the majority of the membership are willing and ready to help out whenever called upon to do so for the Carnival at large as fits their abilities.

Radio

Radio.jpg

The new god/avatar of Radio, it's everywhere in modern society, listening and whispering.

Components and Weaknesses

Components

Voices in Your Head
The Radio. It's talking to YOU. It wants you to do things, things you don't want to do, and yet... You can't help yourself. Requires a Spirit Check to resist, bonuses for willpower and determination qualities. Mortal SRs resist at -1. NPCs fail automatically.

Weaknesses
None currently known.

Newsies

Newsies.jpg

The many minions of a greater avatar. They appear as children peddling newspapers, often in pairs or even packs, and can be relentless. While they can be dangerous in numbers, it's their ability to shape and bend reality that makes them truly frightening.

Components and Weaknesses

Components

Everywhere You Turn
Every direction you run, every corner you turn there's more of them waiting for you. You cannot outrun them, and running grants no SP. You must hide from them or fight your way out.
Headline News
The news is the truth. Newsies can will things into being by stating them as fact. PCs usually get some form of resistance roll based on the nature of the statement.
Mists of Memory
Certain Avatars and their minions can erase memory, making gods and monsters forget aspects of themselves. Spirit is rolled to resist. The first use on a target in a scene must be something simple. The second can be more complex. A third successful use can erase all memory. This amnesia lasts 24 hours if the god or monster escapes alive, but a god or monster that dies while fully wiped cannot rise later and simply ceases to exist. Triggers a Freak-Out check in all gods and monsters present when used.

Weaknesses
None currently known.

Beings of Belief

This story, you aren't human. Arguably, you're the monsters. As such things will be quite different. Humans are weaker than you, and unless they are heavily armed or in great numbers, you don't need to roll to act upon them. Individual humans can be harmed or killed with little effort, and can do little harm to you. This will not be a story filled with Kill Scenes.

When true danger arises in a Director-run scene, you CAN die, but death for you is rarely permanent. Gods and monsters that are killed rise again within 24 hours by either spending 8GP or lowering a stat by one level. There are ways in-game to recover these lost stats, and if Slasher has shown us anything it's that GP isn't scarce. Do keep in mind that if a stat drops below Poor, the character dies. Getting killed a lot can be a problem.

Gods and monsters don't get sick, don't contract or carry/spread diseases, and do not age. The weaker they get, yes, they start to wither and decay, but it's not the same.

Powers

Powers will be handled as Perks. There are two basic types - Minor Powers (10P) and Major Powers (40P). We'll use Thor as an example.

A strong, healthy version of Thor would have Major Power: Lightning. This would allow him to call down lighting from the sky and throw it at his enemies. This is a serious power, and therefore it costs a lot. There will be a GP cost and an activation roll to determine success, but the power itself is very strong.

A weaker, burning-out version of Thor would have Minor Power: Lightning. With this, he can only channel and direct existing lightning in a storm, not create it from thin air. There is still a GP cost and activation roll, but it's far more limited in scope and use.

To sum up, a Major Power can simply be called forth from nothing. Fire, lightning, storms, instantaneous healing, etc. A Minor Power alters existing sources of fire, lightning, intensifies an existing storm or speeds natural healing. A Major Power costs 5GP to activate, while a Minor Power only costs 3GP. Both require a roll tied to a base stat to use. The Director will tell you which stat a power uses at character creation.

Using Powers during show RP is free and does not require a roll. Do what you do for the mortal crowds that come to see you! Casual RP is the same. Anything outside of performing or casual RP, however, costs and requires a roll.

Lastly, using powers in front of the masses can have consequences. Performing a miraculous trick on stage is one thing. Doing it in the street is another. Unwanted attention, fearful, angry mobs - these are only a few concerns to think about when using a power.

Being Forgotten

The real danger you're trying to avoid is being completely forgotten. There will be certain places, things and threats that can cause your character to start to forget what and who they really are. Should they forget completely, they're unmnade. That's permanent. Likewise, a god or monster who dies while suffering from forgetting cannot rise again. When you encounter something IC that can do this to you, it triggers a Freak-Out check. You should respond accordingly IC, as these things are terrifying to your kind.

Perks and Quirks

This story you may have 60pts of Perks, paid for by taking Quirks. Gods get one Power (Minor) for free, and monsters get Shapeshift (Human) free to blend in.

Perks

10 Point Perks
Good Luck

Re-roll 1 die. Once per Scene. You must select which die you wish to reroll.

Minor Power

You can influence and alter existing things. Make fire spread, make a storm worse, make a wound heal faster, tweak luck, see glimpses of the past and future, etc. 3GP per use. Requires a Stat Check of associated stat (Director assigns it). If the roll fails, no GP is spent. Casual daily RP does not require expenditure.

Shapeshifter: Human

You can take on other guises at will, changing age, ethnicity and gender. You can rearrange Brawn, Finesse and Spirit to fit the new guise. 2GP per use, includes changing back. Casual daily RP does not require expenditure.

Adrenaline Boost

Can add an additional +1 die. Once per Scene.

Shapeshifter: Animal

You can take on animal forms at will. In an animal form you can rearrange Brawn, Finesse and Spirit to fit the animal. 2GP per use, includes changing back. Casual daily RP does not require expenditure.

20 Point Perks
Steel Yourself

Use before a Freak-Out Check to automatically succeed once per Scene for 3GP.

Versatile

Use a Positive quality in a tagential (other) Stat Check once per Scene.

30 Point Perks
Let's End This

Double SP gain on a Stat Check that has a Matched Set. Once per scene for 3GP.

Familiar

You have a mortal or animal that is tightly bound to you, connected beyond the level of a normal believer. They take the place of one of your three SRs, and can have up to 30pts of Perks for 30pts of Quirks to balance them. Cannot be taken with Cult.

Back for More

If put in negatives, roll 1d6. On a 4-6, stay at 1 SP and continue. Once per scene for 3GP (if successful).

40 Point Perks
Major Power

You can create and manipulate forces, elements or materials with will alone. Create fire, throw lightning, forge steel from thin air, heal wounds instantly, create and ruin luck, weave new futures, and so on. 5GP per use. Requires a Stat Check of associated stat (Director assigns it). If the roll fails, no GP is spent. Results are determined by the Director in the interest of balance and story. Casual daily RP does not require expenditure.

Cult

You don't have SRs, you have a small cult of worshippers that are part of the carnival. You can tap them for up to 15GP per Chapter and die once per Chapter for free. Further deaths per Chapter must be paid in GP or by lowering a stat.

Quirks

10 Point Quirks
Goliath

You don't know your own strength, and often damage things or hurt others when you aren't careful. You may big and lumbering as well, awkward when nothing is the right size for you.

Minor Weakness

Something rare can cause you harm, or even kill you. Silver, gold, cold iron, holy water, etc.

Archaic Mind

You're a product of a bygone era and can't fully adjust to the modern world. Your speech is odd, or your style of dress is quaint, and you have problems with technology - you can't drive a car, etc.

Freak

Something about your god or monster nature carries over in every guise you have. A vestigial tail, one-eyed, fangs, clawed hands, etc. While this is useful as a performer, it makes you stand out in a crowd as a freak.

Too Pretty

You're inhumanly beautiful, and stick out no matter how hard you try to fit in or look normal. Mortals become obsessed with you.

Bestial

Even in your human guise(s), you radiate a feral, bestial nature. Mortals are instinctively afraid of you and will not trust you.

20 Point Quirks
Monstrous Diet

You eat... non-typical things. Blood or people, glass, dirt, etc. This can make it hard to blend in among mortals as anything else makes you violently ill.

Psychopomp: Touch

Anyone you touch gives you visions of their death, or the death of loved ones. This is NOT a good or enjoyable thing as you experience it as if it were your own. The effects of this quirk happens every single time you touch anyone. Requires a Spirit Check, no GP or re-rolls, to avoid going into shock and panic.

Psychopomp Touch FAQ

1. Is it finger touch or any contact between naked skin? Does it have to be a touch initiated by the PC with Psychopomp? Does touching clothes trigger it off or does it have to be skin?
Skin contact of any kind.
2. Can the vision change? If I touch someone and see through their eyes that their husband kills them, can I tell our vengeance/justice goddesses who will then kill the husband before it happens and therefore invalidates the vision? Is it a concrete Fate or something that suits the conditions at the time of the touch?
It changes every time. The future isn't static, and everyone dies. It's not a power and not meant to be used as such.
3. What happens when you touch another of the PCs? Do I see their death?
See above.
4. What happens when I touch myself?
No. It doesn't happen from self-contact.
5. Who provides the visions? If I touch another PC, can I pose any vision I wish since it could be different the next time I touch them? The point of the quirk is to have a nasty vision that is distressing and debilitating - should there therefore be no details at all? Or unremembered details to prevent it being used as a power?
Since it's of no story consequence, you can make it up, let them make one up, or just refuse to say IC.

Fortune's Fool

You're unlucky. Cursed. Bad to be around. Once per scene, you can be given a -1 on any roll. Or it might be given to someone else. (Director picks)

Superstitious

You're a creature of belief, and a slave to it. There are plenty of old wives tales about things that bring bad luck, and you won't do any of them. Ignoring your superstitions requires a Spirit Check, no GP or re-rolls allowed.

Major Weakness

Something common can cause you harm, or even kill you. Sunlight, fire, garlic, crosses, etc.

30 Point Quirks
Nocturnal

You can only be out and active at night. You can be awake at any time, but are sluggish and confined to your tent or trailer unless you possess an SR.

Psychopomp: Sight

Everyone you see is dead. You see their decaying, rotting corpses, not their current body or self. You do NOT see ghosts or talk to the dead, that's a power. This just sucks.

Diurnal

You can only be out and active during the day. You can be awake at any time, but are sluggish and confined to your tent or trailer unless you possess an SR.

Supporting Roles

Supporting Roles will once again serve a slightly different purpose in this story. Each is a mortal that works for the carnival, but more importantly, they're true believers in your gods and monsters. This makes them valuable in new ways.

First, each can give up to 3GP to your Archetype per Chapter, which is important because your powers cost GP and you won't be getting nearly as much in RP as you did in Slasher. A Chapter is a set amount of time on the carnival circuit, generally 2-3 RL weeks, but IC time may vary. One Chapter may cover a single stop on the circuit - an important IC week in Iowa - and another may jump through IC months at a time chasing down a lead. You'll keep track of the GP they have on their wikis. Edits leave trails, so cheating would be easy to spot, and I trust you guys anyway.

Second, you can possess them, using their body and talents (stats and qualities) in place of your own, except Brains. This allows them to go off and handle business for you, or take risks you'd rather not take. If they die while you're possessing them, they're dead and you return to your own body, so keep that in mind. Possession costs 1GP, but like shapeshifting and using powers need not be paid for as a part of casual, daily RP. Plot/story scenes require expenditure.

Third, you can choose to have one die in your place if you're killed IC. Instead of burning GP or lowering a stat by a level, you can take their life essence to rise again.

You get three SRs this story. Use them wisely!

Genre Points

Your SRs or cult are your main source of GP this story. I want gaining GP to be hard and using Powers to be taxing. It's not an easy life as a dying god or monster. That said, there are still +kudos, and I will give 1GP for ONE performance scene per Chapter that you RP as your character, and 1GP for up to THREE performance scenes per Chapter you RP as a mortal carnival-goer. This will hopefully encourage you to RP squishies for each other to play with and chew on, letting you get into your god/monster's inhumanity. Non-performers (rousties, etc.) get credit for RPing setup, repair, teardown, etc., or whatever job they do.

You will also get GP for certain Directed scenes, as usual.

Amazingly, no one is dead yet.

Funny quotes, images, etc. related to the Carnival story.

"Very good for a mammal. Correct number of limbs," says Oh, carefully, to Diamanto "And he has hair, and probably a number of organs." Wow, and then Leona is doing some sort of toxoplasmosis-inspired feline rage.

Diamanto says, "Kemen said I should learn Feminism. I think we should arm all the women." See? She's solved feminism, guys.

Apparently a sleepy, almost no longer existing serpent can sleep through anything. _Anything_. Except suddenly Urania is yelling and Oh jerks upright, flailing arms that are still all too new to him "...ahhhhhso sorry!" he says, fuzzily "I'm so sorry! I won't do it again - it was an accident! He tripped and fell in my mouth!"

"If you want an orgy, just come ask Dean for an invitation to the next party," Diamanto says. "The Christians declared him the devil, so he's still pretty much the king of the orgy and every other fun thing the Christians want you to want but never have."

"It occurs to me that-" Her favorite cat, now, has some sort of death wish, or is possibly having a seizure.

She just stares. Stares like a cat stares, she's just not remotely anything like a cat at all, other than the staring. The staring is spot on.

As he lands, and uncoils into more or less himself, in more or less his altogether, her shoulders sink by degrees as though the simple weight of existence left her utterly at a loss. "Cat!" J'accuse! Peevishly nonchalant, she knocks the remaining mug -- that the mead in the bowl could have been poured off and into -- into the dust with a hollow clank. Oops.

"I have never thought about that," Diamanto tells Loki, "but I have considered slapping you every time I see you. Just slapping the taste right out of your mouth. It would be my hello, my good-bye, and my conversational filler in the middle. I would just..." She makes a cuffing motion. "Right upside the head. I feel pretty good about that revelation."

"He's one of the greatest kings in history. I'm just me," Colorado murmurs. He's watching with great attention to the ritual, to Osiris in his finery, and Sekhmet in her equally fine fur. "Hush up, it's like church."

"I've been to church. There's no lions drinking blood at church."

[Public] {Bon-Bon Vivant} Dean finds self saying to someone 'oh god the Gods are being terrible people'. A short summary of mythology in one sentence.
