Ray and Cassie's Son

She dwells with Beauty—Beauty that must die;
xxxxxAnd Joy, whose hand is ever at his lips
Bidding adieu; and aching Pleasure nigh,
xxxxxTurning to poison while the bee-mouth sips:
Ay, in the very temple of Delight
xxxxxVeil'd Melancholy has her sovran shrine,
xxxxxxxxxxThough seen of none save him whose strenuous tongue
xxxxxCan burst Joy's grape against his palate fine;
His soul shalt taste the sadness of her might,
xxxxxAnd be among her cloudy trophies hung.

- John Keats, Ode on Melancholy

Jaded. Cynical. Tortured. Pessimistic. Or perhaps he's simply a realist.

The Melancholic sees joy, beauty, and delight as fleeting veils; ephemeral pleasures that only serve to distract from looming and inevitable sorrow. Melancholy is sovereign, and all else fades before her.

While the Melancholic might take what joy there is to be found in the moment, may appreciate what beauty there is in the world, it's at best bittersweet, and more oft than not, joy and beauty turn to ash the instant they touch his lips.

There won't be any happy endings for him; how could an ending ever be a happy thing?

Archetype Roster Concept

Does any of this even matter? There's a strange freedom in ennui, in knowing that none of this may be real or important in the end. It can be liberating to not hold on to sentimentality.

Role in Bonds of Blood

The kid's always been weird, even by Thistle standards.

He hardly has any friends, and the ones he has -- save one -- are tenuous at best; he spends more time talking to himself than to other students, barely says a word in classes, eats by himself, and spends hours scribbling in that creepy journal he's always carrying. He keeps his grades high, but daydreams through classes. His participation is nonexistent, and getting a word out of him is harder than prying teeth -- except in English class.

He's not much better with his family. After his twin brother's death, he's always felt out of place -- and for years, he'd insist his brother was still alive, that he could see him and speak to him. For most kids, imaginary friends are a phase, but they've never disappeared for James; he's just learned better than to talk to them in public, when he can avoid it. Besides... they're not exactly imaginary.

  • I See Dead People: In a small town like Lake Havasu, it's not much of a secret that James is a little troubled: the doctors say he has schizophrenia. Others may think he's just a little off, that he talks to himself, or has imaginary friends.
  • Library Lurker: If he's not at home after school, odds are he's at the library, where he works part-time, or in the cemetery.
  • Run, Forrest: Since his sophomore year, James has been running cross country. None of his other extra-curriculars have stuck. He's made attempts at drama, and the school paper, but there's just something liberating about running himself ragged that works for James.
  • Friends in Low Places: James has a few unconventional friends; spirits he's met in the funeral home or at the cemetery. Most frequently, he speaks with his twin brother Joshua, who died when the pair were four.

Brawn: Poor
+ Resilient (Positive)

Years of getting pushed around and stuffed in lockers has a way of teaching a kid to take a beating.
Finesse: Normal
+ Cross Country (Positive)

The only extracurricular he's managed to stick with for more than a month or two.
Brains: Good
+ Occult (Positive)

He spends an abnormal amount of time hanging out at the cemetery.
+ Gothic Lit (Positive)

Poetry, especially. It's rare to see him without a morbid or depressing book written by somebody who died centuries ago.
- Distracted (Negative)

Between a propensity for daydreaming and a tendency to hear and see things that aren't there, he's seldom giving his full attention.
Spirit: Good
+ Sensitive (Positive)

The teen has an innate sensitivity to spiritual and occult things.
- Loner (Negative)

Most of his real friends... aren't real.

Perks and Quirks

+ Youthful Exuberance

Your 3GP cost for a re-roll is waived. Obviously you're young and indestructible.
+ Thistle Trait

Spirit sensitivity and resistance. Can roll Spirit to sense the presence of ghosts/spirits nearby (Vampires included), and get +1 on rolls resisting their powers.
+ Thistle Boon

Can roll Spirit to communicate with ghosts and spirits and interact with them. On an exceptional success, can compel them.
+ Versatile

Use a Positive quality in a tangential (other) Stat Check once per Scene.
+ Adrenaline Boost

Can add an additional +1 die. Once per Scene.
- Unreliable

Even at their best, they're still kids. They're unlikely to be taken seriously, and are more likely to get into trouble.
- Thistle Taint

Strangeness. The Director will have odd things happen around you that you get blamed for.
- Reputation (Crazy)

Deserved or not, you got a bad rep, and it follows you. -1 Spirit on your first social roll once per scene. Others are encouraged to RP your reputation with and around you. James' psychological troubles aren't exactly a well-kept secret. Most of the school knows that he hears and sees things that aren't there.
- Tasted Blood

In the past month before the story starts, you tasted Vampiric blood without realizing it, and are now one step down the path to becoming a Vampire. The side effects so far are minor, and you don't even consciously notice them or that anything is wrong. You're clueless for now.

The sun's a bit bright to you now, and you try to avoid it where you can, but it's Havasu and it's hot so that's not too strange. You struggle to wake up in time for school and feel more awake at night. Again, this may not even be something new for some of you.

Lana Reed, The Bestie

High School Senior

She's the best. I've always been able to talk to Lana about anything.

Cash Freeland, The Ex-Friend

High School Senior

We used to be close, the three of us. But after all the drama last summer, I can barely stand to look at him.

Thea Marchant, The Unrequited Crush

Feral Ingenue

I used to have a crush on her; last summer, we really hit it off. I thought we had something, but I was wrong. She's awful.

Spear Thistle

Gadfly Gloomcookie

I don't think goths are supposed to smile that much, Spear.

Silver Luna Thistle

Senior Morbid Thistle Student

Star Thistle

Creepy Goth Kid
