Barns Courtney - Fire

Lonely shadows following me

Lonely ghosts come a-calling

Lonely voices talking to me

Now I'm gone, now I'm gone, now I'm gone

And my mother told me son let it be

Sold my soul to the calling

Sold my soul to a sweet melody

Now I'm gone, now I'm gone, now I'm gone

Billy Joel - The Stranger

Well, we all have a face

That we hide away forever

And we take them out

And show ourselves when everyone has gone

Some are satin, some are steel

Some are silk and some are leather

They're the faces of a stranger

But we'd love to try them on

Postmodern Jukebox - Seven Nation Army

And I'm talking to myself at night

Because I can't forget

Back and forth through my mind

Behind a cigarette

And the message coming from my eyes

Says leave it alone

Thomas Benjamin Wild Esq. - I've No More F***s to Give

I've no more fucks to give,

My fucks have runneth dry,

I've tried to go fuck shopping

But there's no fucks left to buy

I've no more fucks to give,

Though more fucks I've tried to get,

I'm over my fuck budget and

I'm now in fucking debt

Introvert. Hermit. Recluse. Misanthrope. Outcast. Stranger. Loner. He's not the type that's easy to get along with or get to know. He keeps his own counsel, trusts himself above all others, and generally finds others annoying or else they're too much effort to deal with. He puts up walls, and they almost never come down. Even those that finally earn his trust or affection rarely learn the whole of him. Of course, there's safety in numbers and he's not about to shun perfectly good help when it's offered, just don't expect him to sit around the campfire and sing Kumbaya. Unless there's s'mores. Everyone loves s'mores.

Archetype Roster Concept

You don't play well with others or make friends easily, but that's because people can't hurt you if you never give them a chance to. You get that there's safety in numbers, you just avoid getting attached.

In the Facility

Facility Persona

The Loner of the facility is generally quiet and reserved. He spends a good deal of time in his room and when he does peek out it's generally to grab food or something he saw on the bookshelf. He's soft-spoken and calm, though can become sarcastic and defensive if he's being confronted directly by someone. He seems to be handling the situation well, or he's very good at putting up a front.

Things That Linger

The Loner, for some reason, often has a Scottish accent - always in the Facility and frequently in his various incarnations. He's always socially awkward in one form or another, but that much is to be expected. Though he's typically brilliant in one field or another, frequently an intellectual sort sometimes this shows itself as being good at a certain skill to the exclusion of all else.

The Loner's Door

A solitary male figure huddled alone in darkness.

The Loner's Room

Loner Room.jpg
The Loner's room is the type of place you could hole up in and only emerge occasionally for sustenance. Everything is simple, but comfortable, the walls are a dark grey that somehow manages to not be oppressive. A bed with a plain black headboard and grey sheets dominates one wall of the room.

Across from that is a living area. There's a large plush couch in pale grey, a darker grey knit blanket strewn across it, perfect for nesting in. A reading nook is separated from the sitting area by a slatted wood barrier, containing a single lounging chair and a tall bookcase filled to brimming with various books, games, and puzzles. Everything one needs for a little bit of entertainment. The wall next to the door has a single black wood desk with a typewriter sitting on top of it. The wall above the desk contains mounts or frames holding all the various mementos from his various lives, each time coming back to a new item on the wall. The only splashes of color come from a few green plants dotted about the room.

Memento Mori

Isle of Dread

Electric Guitar: Blood red and emblazoned on the front with the logo of the band Slaying Dragons, this instrument was the favorite of Andrew McInverness, the band's lead singer and frontman. It was left behind on the island as Andrew was evacuated but has found its way to the facility.

Alien Mutation

Colonial Marshal Pistol: Although this pistol was destroyed by acidic alien blood it has found its way back to the facility. Carried by Callum during most of his time on the Noc station, this sidearm was responsible for several murdered aliens. There's some acid etching on the metal but otherwise it's in good condition.

Prosperity's Price

Infernal Ether Mask: A creepy looking ether mask made of black metal and cloth. It had the power to bring back the dead, which it did once, in exchange for the life of Glenn McTavish. Crumbling to dust afterwards, it is now whole but powerless in the Facility.

McQueen #17 Jersey: A jersey with McQueen and 17 on the back and the logo of the University of Oregon on the front. This belonged to to Julian's brother Gus, and after the death of the latter the former wore it almost every day at the lodge. At least until it got burned and shredded in the final confrontation in the bunker. Somehow it's whole in the facility.

No memento mori from this story yet.

Project Icarus

Cybernetic Arm: This robotic left arm was worn and wielded by the Penumbra drone tech Jamie MacLeod. Made when he still worked for Weyland-Yutani as a cooperative project between him and his brother's spouse KJ MacLeod. Now it's pretty much useless, but looks cool mounted on the wall.

Bonds of Blood

Waterford Crystal Decanter Set: This decanter full of bourbon and its two matching glasses used to sit in the parlor of the Marchant manor. Finely cut and opulent, it certainly belonged there more than on a shelf on display in Loner's room like it currently is. At least the bourbon inside is of high quality.

The Last Road

No memento mori from this story yet.

The Loner appears young in the facility, maybe only twenty or twenty-one years old. His curly brown hair is short but still manages to be messy, and he's frequently clean shaven. He favors loose, comfortable clothing: hoodies, sweaters, and the like.

The Beast 1.jpg

Only friend from the Island, maybe more..

First spent time together at Beaver Lodge, and he doesn't piss me off.. might be a friend.

Loner Chastity.jpg

Chastity Pottinger (Isle of Dread)

Band Stylist
Chastity has served as the stylist for the band Slaying Dragons for a few years now. Everything about their fashion to their hairstyles has all been her discretion. With input (read: bitching) from the band members. She's also the only stylist ever to be able to rein in Andrew to some degree and get him to cooperate. So of course the band's manager sent her along to keep everyone looking their best during the month long festival.

Loner Clara 1.jpg

Clara Jacobs (Alien Mutation)

Lab Assistant
It can't be easy working under a synth, but Clara makes the most of it. In fact, her duties are three-fold. Keep an eye on Callum, act as a go between for those who aren't comfortable with him, and assist him in the lab whenever necessary. She even knows a thing or two about repairing synths, should it come to that.

Loner Luke 1.jpg

Luke Jacobs (Alien Mutation)

Luke signed up with the Colonial Marines as soon as he was able. He made a name for himself there on a number of missions, excelling in infiltrations and small-unit assaults. But the military didn't pay well, and he pissed off too many officers to ever get a promotion, so he went into the gun-for-hire game. He eagerly joined for the mission to Noc station once he learned he could keep an eye on his little sister and her creeptastic synth boss while there.

Loner Randell.jpg

Randell "Randy" Harmon (Isle of Dread)

"Idiot" Drummer
Andrew had it out in a knock-down brawl on stage with the band's previous drummer, it was determined their working relationship could no longer continue. Randell was brought in as a replacement. While he doesn't get on at all with the front man, he seems willing to put up with the insults and sarcastic snipes as long as the money from the gigs keeps coming in. The fights that almost erupt are usually quickly settled by the bassist Rosa who is quick to take Randy out for drinks and get him away from Andrew.

It also helps that he's a decent drummer, even if he can be as dense as a sack of rocks. If there's one thing Andrew wil begrudgingly admit, it's that Randy can play.

Loner Rosa.jpg

Rosa Watkins (Isle of Dread)

Bassist and vocalist for the occasional duet, she's been with Andrew and Slaying Dragons since the band formed. There's been plenty of rumors about the two, everything from them sleeping together to barely being able to stand each others' presence outside of shows.

The truth is their relationship is coolly professional and they keep it there. They have staked out their territories and know not to intrude too much upon each other. The fact that she's hot on the strings means Andrew will keep her around despite any headaches she causes, and she is one of the few that can defuse tension between the front man and their drummer.

Loner Angus.jpg

Angus "Gus" McQueen (Slasher)

Frat Boy
Gus McQueen is the ideal of college frat boys. A senior, athletic, on the hockey team, passable if not stellar grades, and an ability to let loose and party like no one's business. He's enjoyed college life and he wants to make sure his baby brother does, too. He's "protective" of the younger guy in all the wrong ways, shoving him into bad decisions "for his own good" rather than keeping him out of harm's way. For the most part it's worked out well to this point..

Loner James.png

James MacInroy (Carnival)

Animal Handler/Veterinarian
James is an immigrant from Scotland that the Carnival picked up while they were travelling up and down the east coast. Rather, he ran away from his family to join the Carnival after seeing Missing's bears. His father was a veterinarian and he was training under him to follow in the family trade, but he fell in love with the giant beasts and pestered Missing until he agreed to take the kid along. He's a bit weird but he takes good care of the animals and is more than happy to look at the Carnival's other animals as needed.

Loner Kisux.jpg

Kišux (Carnival)

Kišux is the male of Missing's two bears. He's the larger of the two but generally the lazier as well. He'll do anything for a snack. He's a bear, what more do you want?

Loner Nipahem.jpg

Nipahëm (Carnival)

Nipahëm is the smaller female of Missing's two bears. She's also the smarter one, a quick learner. She has a weakness for apples.

Loner Alex Tanner 1.jpg

Alex Tanner (Bonds of Blood)

Bouncer at Kokomo
Tanner has been "friends" with Theo since middle school. Really, Theo just found the biggest guy in class and bribed him to be friends with him for a little extra protection, and Tanner was only too happy to oblige. Over time, the two actually have developed something of a mutual respect and fondness for each other even though they couldn't be any more different. After high school, Tanner went into the army, and when he came back, Theo pulled some strings to get him a job bouncing at Kokomo. He also keeps an eye on things there for Theo, especially on Vincent.

Loner Justin Michaels 1.jpg

Justin Michaels (Bonds of Blood)

High School Senior
Justin transferred to Havasu High in the middle of Sophomore year when his dad got a job at the First Havasu Bank. He's on the basketball team, and tries to be outgoing and friendly, but he still feels like the new kid in town more often than not. He's also out of the closet, which wasn't so bad back home in a big city, but the small town has him worried.

Loner Tak.jpg

Tak (The Last Road)

Tak was born pure in Sanctuary. As a young child he didn't show much promise in other fields and was left with the Fortunate as a Meanie. Eventually, he showed some aptitude in working with his hands and making small delicate items such as jewelry and other luxury items. He's soft-spoken, twitchy, and likes to go about as unnoticed as possible. For some reason, Mask looks out for him and makes sure he's protected.

Loner1 Meat.jpg

Meat (The Last Road)

Meat is not what might be expected from a Confessor, he looks and often acts more like he belongs with the Keepers or even the War Kids. He's brash, he's tough, and he likes to get physical. This actually makes him the perfect foil for Mask, acting as the muscle while Mask acts as brains. The two have often acted as partners since they were kids, something in their shared history having caused the two to form a strong bond.

Loner 1.jpg

Andrew McInverness (Isle of Dread)

You never had mates growing up. You had music, and it was always there for you. You consumed all of it you could, every genre. Over time your tastes refined and you spent your very first paycheck from your very first job on a shitty old guitar from a pawn shop. You still have that guitar. You never really wanted fame, but you got it. You were discovered at a small, local gig and the next thing you knew you were selling out Wembley. The money was great. The attention is fucking torture. All you want is to make music, but being a musician today means being a celebrity. You nearly ODed a couple times, but your boy Smith keeps saving you. He's followed you everywhere since you helped him out on the street one night. You keep threatening to fire him, but you both know you won't - he's the only person you can tolerate for more than a day. Even your band drives you close to murder.

Now you're on this fucking island because your manager said the money was too good to pass up. Great. Stuck on an island for thirty fucking days with a bunch of kids. Your band are having a great time, too, which makes you even more miserable because fuck those cunts. Now you know what Hell is.

Loner Callum 1.jpg

Callum McClane (Alien Mutation)

You're a Callum model Synthetic, made exclusively for the Colonial Marshals to be a living crime lab. You can do on-scene in minutes what a traditional forensic team needs days in a lab to accomplish, after collecting the evidence. Most of your line simply go by Callum as a last name, and give no first name, but you have a fondness for American cinema, and in particular the old cop movies of the 20th century. You chose McClane as a last name in honor of the DIE HARD character played by Bruce Willis, making Callum a first name. It's not unheard of, but it is unusual. Your precinct has long ago realized you're eccentric, even for a Synthetic, and they just roll with it. You know many of them make jokes at your expense and look at you as an expensive piece of equipment more than a colleague, but you also know they run to you the second they need you. And they always need you.

Loner Glenn.jpg

Glenn McTavish (Prosperity's Price)

Robert's youngest son. Born during a reaping, blue with his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, Glenn survived by a miracle. However, the rest of his childhood was plagued by frequent bouts of illness and a poor constitution. He spent his youngest years sheltered by his father and developed a reputation for aloofness and oddity. Everyone expected each reaping to be his last and he survived every one. That is until the seventeenth one, during which he disappeared for a few days. After that his health improved and he declared his intent to leave the town. He headed east, to one of the universities out on the coast. But as with all members of the founding families he was pulled back, returning just after the last reaping. He has since taken over the old herbalist and apothecary that the McTavishes acquired when the Crenshaws left town.

Loner McQueen.png

Julian McQueen (Slasher)

Julian's happiest childhood moment was the day his parents announced they were getting divorced. Father was an American diplomat in Scotland, Mother was a fiery Scottish civil servant, and their marriage was a lot like haggis: ugly, messy, and desired by no one. Dad went home, and Julian stayed with Mom while his older brother Angus went with Dad. Mom never really got over Dad, as bad as they were together, and his life was made miserable for lack of a better target. Then she up and died.

Julian had to finish high school in the US, and only because Dad pulled strings did he get into American college with so much of his transcripts a mess as far as American requirements. So off to UO he went, as it was Dad's alma mater. Angus was waiting for him and dragged him kicking and screaming into the fraternity. Angus means well, but seriously does not understand his baby brother, and all of his helping usually just makes things worse. Like this Summer adventure, for instance.

Loner Mesingw 3.jpg

Mesingw (Carnival)

Coming To America

Missing wasn't always missing, once he was Mesingw. He was born of this land and his people lived on the eastern shores and were some of the first to come into contact with the new arrivals. His people wore his mask and he aided them in their hunts. He was the master of game, and the preserver of the balance of nature. The woods and the wilds were his, but he also knew an eternal truth..

Something bigger always comes along to hunt you.

And so was he pushed back from the eastern woods to the plains of the Midwest, and eventually his people stopped wearing his mask. They stopped calling on his aid. He no longer spoke into their dreams. They no longer called upon his blessing in the hunt. But there's another eternal truth..

A cornered animal will do anything to survive.

The Bear Tamer

What is a being of the wilds to do when it comes to survival? Tend to his flock. Animals and menageries have always been part of traveling shows. This way at least he can make sure they are treated with respect and dignity when not parading on stage. It is a sad consequence of the need for survival and something he accepts with a grim stoicism. To the patrons he is as much an oddity as his bears. Something to be gawked at.

At least the bears make for decent company.

Loner MacLeod 2.jpg

Jamie MacLeod (Project Icarus)

Jamie comes from a family of tech nerds, and he stands out as particularly skilled. Ever since his great-grandfather worked for Weyland-Yutani building synths, members of his MacLeod clan have found themselves naturally drawn to the fields of mechanics and engineering. A brainiac, Jamie plowed his way through his education, graduating with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering by 22. His final project being a cybernetic arm he built for himself to replace the arm he lost in an accident. He was recruited by Weyland-Yutani, where he had been interning, and became one of their prized engineers.

He discovered some dubious practices though while he worked for the company, and when Penumbra came knocking in an attempt to recruit him he was only to happy to shift loyalties, even when the price take was a little corporate espionage. He took several confidential schematics and prototypes with him when he jumped ship, and Penumbra has been keeping W-Y off of his back ever since. He found his way into Penumbra's drone projects and has been contentedly working there ever since, occasionally going off site to repair, maintain, or deploy drones to various Penumbra interests.

When the chance came to explore Icarus, well, he wasn't interested at all in the slightest. But he owes Penumbra and when they told him to jump, he jumped. They wanted one of their best on the mission and so he had to go. At least that's how he sees it. Not to mention a personal stake, one Dr. K.J. MacLeod a biotech scientist that was on the first mission, a friend, confidant, and his brother's spouse.

Loner Marchant 1.jpg

Theodore Marchant (Bonds of Blood)

Eldest of Robert and Monique Marchant's children, Theodore was never the most athletic or popular kid growing up. He was aloof at the best of times, but he had a quick mind and a keen sense for opportunity. Being a son of one of the wealthier families in town kept the bullies at bay and bought him at least a few friends growing up, but he always saw it as a trade. Beer for companionship, weekends at the lake for friendship. After graduation a few stings were pulled and his father got him into Yale, when he eventually completed his Law degree. He came back after graduation and now works for his father's bank as their personal legal pitbull.
