At school on Wednesday, Marianne found a note in her locker. A note with a whole screw taped to it. It couldn't have fit through the vents. The note says to meet at the wood shop after the buses clear out. 'If you want to make something, I can put you to work and teach at the same time." His slanting left handed scrawl explains. "P.S. I can break into the lockers. And I'm a show off."
Sure enough, at the wood shop's wide double door is a pickup truck. Freeland Roofing and Flooring, it reads. The bed is filled 2x4s and second hand baseball bats. Saws, nails, and other sharp bits are in boxes and containers. And a coil of barbed wire. There is also Ms. Hellenbrand, the choir teacher explaining to Cash that, "If you get caught and anyone asks how you got it?
"I broke in. And they can ask anyone. I break into lockers all the time." He looks bored. She makes an exit. "I had nothing to do with this!" She yells once more before leaving.
It's the weirdest thing that Marianne has ever found in one of her lockers - but that's because the note have never come with a screw attached. The note had definitely grabbed her interest and actually doing something with Cash sounded much better than what she'd had planned for the day. Marianne killed some time in the hallway for a bit after school and then came straight down to the wood shop as soon as most of the busses had cleared.
She was intrigued with whatever Cash had planned but her interest is renewed even more when she hears the choir teacher shouting. Her eyebrows raise and she reaches out to put a hand on Cash's shoulder. "Is this some sort of felony? Because honestly, it beats sitting at home binge-eating Oreos with milk and watching the daytime talk show leftovers."
Silver is something of a snoop. She is also very sneaky so most people don't notice. So is it really any surprise she's hanging out, just around the edge of the shop's doors, with a curious expression. Then she pops her head around the corner and quirks a brow at Cash and Marianne. "Did someone mention Oreos?"
Cash looks like a whole professional. His hair is pulled back into a neat french braid with then tail tucked in. (His sister did during lunch period. Enough people thought is was weird enough to repeat.) He's dressed properly for a work site. From steel toed boots to eye protection on his forehead to thick leather gloves. There are a new pair of woman's steel toed boots with neon pink laces sitting on a counter. They are a size 8. Now, Cash took a wild guess on size so the box and receipt are nearby. Also with them is a new pair of eye protection goggles. At one tables the students sit, Jolene Chapel and her O2 tank sits with hand drawn plans from Cash, receipts and an inventory from the look of it. For a vampire weapon making operation, it's tidy.
Cash rushes over to Marianne and gives her a little hug. "I'm glad you came. We're going to be woodworking today. Also, creating weaponry designed to increase ones's likelihood of escape. That's Jolene. She's homeschooled so she's helping with organization." Silver appears, asking about Oreos. Cash snorts. "He doesn't want to commit a felony. "At the most? It's breaking and entering for me. And I bet we can talk it down to a misdemeanor. Or insanity." This is fine with him, apparently."
"Wow, you even did your hair for the occasion," Marianne says teasingly while she hugs Cash, a bit of a mischievous twinkle in her eye. She eyeballs the boots and asks, "For me?" Whether or not they're for her, she's going to try them on. She half-smiles over at Jolene before going straight for the boots, taking her sneaks off. "Wait, creating weaponry designed to increase one's likelihood of escape?"
Marianne raises a brow and manages a quiet hello to Jolene while she takes in what Cash just said. "What exactly are planning to escape from? Authority figures or...?" Misdemeanors and insanity make her shake her head as she laces up her boots, looking over to Silver with a slight grin. "This is now officially more exciting than the Oreos I had planned."
The mention of law breaking has Silver quirking a brow as she enters the shop, hands in pockets. Today she is in jeans and a black t-shirt over a shirt tank. The black having been cut in such a way as to give the impression of a spider-web. Not exactly Silver's usual attire, that's more Star or Spear gothy. Her hair is also pulled back from her face into a bun at the back of her head. A pair of decorative chopsticks sticking out of it. "Oh, we're being bad again are we?" She asks with a smirk as she saunters over to peer into the truck. "Are we making a fortified bunker or something?" She looks up at Marianna and says, "But just how much more exciting would -this- be -with- Oreos."
Silver moves to lean against the truck, shooting Cash an amused look. "Just what did you have in mind? Can't the undead just regenerate? Let me see...uhhh...OH! Stakes! You're making stakes!" She smiles cheerfully and glances over at the lathe.
Cash is all blushy with Marianne. "It's a mess of damaged frizz. I'm going to cut it all off before my audition but that has to be a fresh cut." He calls Silver over with a little whistle. "Get my other pair of safety glassed out the truck. Those have my name on them but first, listen up. Jolene has it allotted out. How much wood is going into stakes and how much is going into blunt and sharp weaponry. There are sawblades and nails to attach to various lengths of wood and we have a few pipes that I will use as reenforcement to blunt weaponry." Cash is very organized as she shows simple drawing with notes on weight and length. "The plan is, I use the power tools, /both/ of you ladies are in the nail and saw attachment gig. I can show you...."
On and on he goes until Jolene taps his hand. "Marianne might not know.." Cash ohs and nods. "Right. Marianne? The Painkillers gang outside of town are murderous vampires and we need to be ready for whatever. The weapons are to slow them. We don't know what kills them yet."
Mari left one of her bulky sweaters in her locker, figuring that excess layers hanging around potential woodshop projects wasn't the keenest of ideas. She reaches up to run her fingers through her ponytail, looking at Silver's shirt. "That's cool," she quips quietly before smiling at Jolene and Silver. "I guess proper introductions haven't been made. I'm Marianne Igesund, also better known as Zane and Art's cousin." She finishes up with her boots and takes a few steps in them, nodding her head. "Thanks, Cash. These fit great!" Mari listens to the grand plan, wondering exactly what she's gotten herself into when they mention stakes. Her brain tries to make sense of why they would need stakes, barring a pretend game of Dark Shadows.
"O-Oh. Okay. Vampires. Yeah." She nods as if it's completely normal and totally acceptable to have heard that out loud. "You know, we might backtrack for Oreos." Coping mechanisms are a hell of a thing. "Wait, is this what you meant by getting out of Lake Havasu after graduation? That there are... vampires? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm in... for the stake making... and being the Frog Brothers from Lost Boys but..."
Silver gives Cash this look when he says he is on power tools. "And why are -you- the only one on power tools?" She asks with a little sniff. "I'm Silver Thistle, your Zane's cousin?" There's a little light in her eyes at that name. "He and I sing in Choir together. Zane, that is." She moves then to fetch the safety goggles out of the truck, listening as Cash is spilling the beans.
As she steps back out of the truck she turns to look at the other girl. Her face awful calm and neutral in the face of Cash just blurting out about, you know, vampires. Tucking the glasses in place she adds in, "There's been numerous occurances of exsanguination as cause of death in this town since it's founding. And that is -not- really a common kind of thing to die from. Unfortunately I don't know the details beyond that...autopsy files are kept at the police station." A pause as she considers Marianne's totally normal reaction.
Cash sighs. "I know it's a lot and coming from me is is...I don't sugarcoat well. I also don't lie. Can't, really. I have tics when I am nervous enough to tell a lie and a lie as big as--monstrous beings outside of our city limits and killing residents...yeah. Also, they attacked me, my boyfriend Hector and our classmate Jade...in the cemetery. I dodged a flying motorcycle. I felt the heat on my face. And they almost took Hector's face off with a chain." He takes a deep breath. "And...and uh, they made me believe that Ms. Hellenbrand was dead. And she's like a second mom to me so." He closes his eyes.
"But as you saw, she's fine. So, they can fuck with your head too. I'm glad you are onboard Marianne." He looks to Silver. "You get drills and hammers. I mean...do you know how to works a smaller power tool, please do. But I'm the only one who feels comfortable using the big table saws and such. I just...know my ability for certain. I don't want any accidents."
Marianne listens and bits her lip slightly while listening to Silver and Cash paint a picture of a perhaps not-so-secret vampire hideout town. "Well, exsanguination from the time the town was founded kind of rules out a serial killer, unless that serial killer is really old." Beat. "Like a vampire. Or multiple vampires." Her head is swimming with possibilities but considering that two pepole who look like they're not crazy to her are telling her that the town is rotten with vampires, she has to go along with it. And really, it's more interesting than Oreos.
"Whatever. You need someone to hammer, I'll hammer. I didn't know that... Lake Havasu was so, uh, wild. You know, besides the college parties and spring break..." Marianne takes in a deep breath and looks from Cash, to Silver, to Jolene and nods her head. "Okay, let's do this. Tell me what I need to do and I'll help any way I can. Plus I think this makes me the most interesting Bloomquist at this moment in time, and I've never really had that before."
Silver seems to ponder Cash about the power tools. Then shrugs her shoulders and nods her head, "Okay. I've used a power and jig saw before. And a lathe. I took basic shop first time I could," She says with a shrug. "But I was pretty quiet." Like she often is in any physical class. But they're not here to talk about shop. They're here to talk about, well, vampires?
"I've seen them with my own eyes. I know you don't know me, but yeah...I watched them tear a woman apart," Silver says and her voice hitches and her eyes drop to the 2x4 she has picked up. "They're frighteningly real. And if you meet an English broad named Fran, politely try and get the fuck out." Now, Cash knows Silver rarely uses swear words. So it may not seem as emphasis to her, but Cash will know she has his back if she's willing to fucking swear. Then she beams ar Marianne. "Awesome! Welcome to Hunters R' Us. Grab a hammer and...right, what -are- we doing Cash?" Funny how not too long ago she was shooting him death-glares and preparing a voodoo doll...
Jolene slides off her stool and leaves, giving Cash a wave. "She can't take the dust in her lungs. Even with a fancy respirator. But she helped me get organized and draw up a proper plan." He points out the spread of paper on the table Jolene left. "So, we are cutting the 2x4s to make stakes, bundgeons and then the simple sort of spiky board. Now, you can see how I intend to make the spilt here..." Cash politely lays out the plan. It is an even an allowance for 'overtime'. Which involves hiding wood and returning his father's work truck. "So, are we ready for phase one?" Of course there are phases.

The description of what Silver saw makes Marianne shudder. She rubs the goosebumps on her arms, suddenly wishing she had the bulky sweater after all. "I'm sorry you had to see that." Mari waves to Jolene as the girl leaves, before she gets ready to take on Cash's instruction. "Phase one, huh? What comes next after stakes? That seems like a pretty... definitive phase. I guess we should try to figure out what else hurts them, too," Marianne says, considering it, but pulling herself back to the topic at hand: how to make pointies to hurt suckies.
Silver comes over and looks at the plans thoughtfully. The mathmatics in her mind kicking into overdrive. She gives a few suggestions to make the most use of their time and their supplies. As well as suggestions for reinforcing the blades attachments so they don't snap off easily with one missed stroke. She waves to Jolen as she heads out, but is obviously distracted by something to do. And something to do with power tools!
As the day heads towards evening she gets more lively. Even singing under her own dust mask as she works. Singing chorus pieces from the schools upcoming musical. She shows how handy she is. Helping Cash out after he cuts himself, wrapping up the booboo and all around being jovial and enjoying the work. Despite it's gruesome intention. Many hands -do- make light work. So they barely need the overtime Cash invested to return and clean it all up. Score one for team Hunters R' Us?
