Every story has a dominant paradigm, and you follow it. The world is the world, the system is the system, and the rules are the rules. Without that structure nothing makes sense or has meaning.

That means, when things get scary, we follow the fucking plan that was already put in place for when things get scary. It means if we all do our jobs, we all get to go home.

Archetype Roster Concept

Every story has a dominant paradigm, and you follow it. The world is the world, the system is the system, and the rules are the rules. Without that structure nothing makes sense or has meaning.

Role in Alien Mutation

Fusion generators. Mining ore boilers. Gas refineries. You grew up with this stuff. Your family is full of engineers and technicians, and you followed in their footsteps. Unlike them, however, you like being out on the fringes of explored space, on the frontier. There's something peaceful and soothing about deep space. You feel so small and insignificant, one with the emptiness around you. No responsibilities, no duties, just you and the stars.

At work, though, you do things by the book. The book exists for a reason - lots of fuckups occurred to make those rules, each rule representing some poor bastard blowing themself half to hell. You run a safe, secure refinery. It's a well-oiled machine and you're the big cog.

;Drinker: Addie likes a drink. Really, a swig or five while on the job is about the only rule she will break.

She's not here by accident, she's not here because she's without choices. She loves this stuff!
Addie has a synth as her right-hand woman. Why? Because she happens to love Synths. Because they listen better. Because they work harder. Because humans are annoying.
Music Enthusiast
After hours, it's not too uncommon to hear some music coming from Addie's room. No only does she listen, but rumor is she's got an old guitar she's in love with.

Vinnie Taylor (Alien Mutation)

Asst. Crew Chief
How to make a Vinnie:

One part reward for decades of good work.
One part investment in a very profitable facility.
One part odd sense of humor of the Synthetic's "owner".
One part quiet threat that high-salary workers could be replaced.

Vinnie Taylor was purchased by Penumbra Corp three years ago and assigned to work in the Refinery, as Addie Jansen's assistant. Why is she a gorgeous woman? Well, why not, says Addie. And why does she have such a strange personality? It just sort of happened. Vinnie herself will be happy to explain her personality, if anyone asks. But be ready for eye-rolling and several long, long groans. That's what humans do, right?

Anyways, Vinnie is a big investment, and just the same, it's a test to see if someone like Addie Jansen (and her high salary) could be replaced. Addie knows damn well she can't, so she's not too worried. But maybe the others at the Refinery should be? Retirement is too far off...

The adherent Cheryl.jpg

Cheryl Stone (Alien Mutation)

Tech wiz. Genius. Prodigy. These are some words that were used to describe Cheryl Stone. Were used. That was before something that can only be described as a mental breakdown. Maybe it was being so deep in space, so isolated. Maybe it was all the pressure she put on herself to perform. Maybe it was just one too many people telling her she was being too difficult. Whatever the case was, Cheryl snapped, and after breaking a few very expensive parts and spending a few nights in lock up, her life had changed completely.

Now, without anywhere to go, without any money, she's decided to keep working at the refinery. The crew chief took some pity on her and instead of bouncing her entirely simply demoted her... to custodian. She cleans, she sweeps, and every so often, Addie will let her take a look at a computer.

Wayne Adams (Alien Mutation)

Refinery Laborer
After two run-ins with Penumbra Corp, Wayne Adams was short on options. Really, there were only the three. Run to somewhere Penumbra Corp has no influence (where?!), go to jail, to agree to a work program to repay the damages done to corporation property. Life without society wasn't appealing. Jail slightly less appealing. But working, well, so long as he was out of shackles, he could always take option 1, if work failed, right?

So here Wayne is, keeping his head down and staying out of trouble. Few more years and his debts would be considered paid and he'd be free once more. Until then? It's hard, sweaty work.
