Played By

Ezra Miller

White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane

One pill makes you larger,

And one pill makes you small

And the ones that mother gives you,

Don't do anything at all

Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits,

And you know you're going to fall

Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar

Has given you the call

And call Alice, when she was just small

Addicted To Love - Robert Palmer

Your lights are on, but you're not home

Your mind is not your own

Your heart sweats, your body shakes

Another kiss is what it takes

Drug - Duran Duran

Take me every morning

Take me every night

Take me when you're feeling low

Take me when you want to stay

Up all night

Kiss Off - The Violent Femmes

I take one, one, one 'cause you left me

And two, two, two for my family

And three, three, three for my heartache

And four, four, four for my headaches

And five, five, five for my lonely

And six, six, six for my sorrow

And seven, seven for no tomorrow

And eight eight I forget what eight was for

And nine nine nine for a lost God

And ten, ten, ten, ten for everything,

Everything, everything, everything

Lie Still Little Bottle - TMBG

Lie still, little bottle

And shake my shaky hand

Black coffee's not enough for me

I need a better friend

One pill at the bottom is

Singing my favorite song

I know I must investigate

I hope that I can sing along

Once is never enough. Sweet release is fleeting, and once it has passed, the emptiness comes. Nothing will fill that void except to indulge again, and again, and again. Each time, push a little further, do a little more. Always more.

Every fix comes with a cost. They swear this is the last time, until the next time.

Archetype Roster Concept

It may change from story to story, but there's always a deep, insatiable hunger for something - alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, food, sex, attention - and the worse the craving gets, the more unpredictable you get.

In the Facility

Facility Persona

The Addict goes by the name Briar. They're genderqueer and have an impressive wardrobe. They also speak with an accent that's part Jersey, part Brooklyn, despite having never been to either of those places (as far as they know).

Briar is usually kind and supportive. They want to do right by their friends, and the lengths they'll go to probably isn't healthy. They may not always be the most reliable friend, but damn if theyr'e not well-intentioned.

Things That Linger

Naturally, The Addict is always addicted to something, though what that thing is changes from lifetime to lifetime. They also have amazing hair.

The Addict's Door

On the door to the Addict's room is a symbol of a person hung upside down in chains above a broken scale. There is a spilled wine bottle to one side of the broken scale and a scattering of pills on the other.

The Addict's Room

Most of the lights in this windowless room are pillar candles or wall sconces, with the exception of the lamp on the bedside table for reading and the lighted mirror on a vanity in the corner. The vanity is draped in clothing tried on and set aside, featuring plenty of satin and lace. There is a sizable collection of makeup on the vanity, as well as hairbrushes, ribbons, and clips.

Amidst draping red tapestries twined with fairy lights is nestled a California King bed with red silk sheets and a feather duvet, heaped with pillows. There is a walk-in closet filled to bursting with shoes and clothing that defy pinpointing any one gender. There is as much leather as there is silk and velvet. On a long chest of drawers, there is a drop cloth of red velvet upon which rests a deck of tarot cards, a bag of runes, I Ching coins, and other tools of divination mixed in with idols carved of semi-precious stones, an ashtray, cigarettes, and an impressive collection of bongs. Heady incense drifts on the air from a brass brazier.

Despite its obvious opulence, no matter how often the occupant of this room tidies up, there's always clothing on the floor and clutter here and there. In one corner, partitioned off by a curtain, is a hookah with four pipes surrounded by comfy floor cushions. On a nearby shelf is a selection of fine tobaccos and a few bottles of whiskey, vodka, and tequila as well as a few fine wines.

The bathroom is expansive and luxurious. There's a bidet, and the bathtub is deep and has jets. The shower is separate, with a monsoon head and a bench built into the wall. There is a heated bin for warm towels, and of course a scattering of knickknacks and another ashtray.

Memento Mori

Prosperity's Price

Papa's Cross: One of his dead father's effects, Martin carried it with him during the banishings, using it as a focus for his spiritual energy. It remains a reminder of his Papa's love and devotion.

Star of David: Suspended from a silver chain is a small Star of David pendant. It's got a little tarnish on it, but it still manages to gleam.

No memento mori from this story yet.

Project Icarus

A lotus pin, symbolizing the Geometrist faith, to which Braden belonged.

Bonds of Blood

A man's ring of petrified wood, with a piece of jade set in the center.

The Last Road

No memento mori from this story yet.

Briar is slender and tall, with shoulder-length dark hair and deep brown eyes. They're youthful, with a handsome face dusted with a sparse amount of facial hair when they haven't bothered to shave. They usually wear their hair back in a bun, with loose strands to frame their face. When they smile, there's a sparkle in those eyes and a dimple in each cheek.

Their clothing varies from day to day, but the common theme is gender fluidity. They seem to favor kimono-style robes, though sometimes they'll go as simple as jeans and a t-shirt or elaborate as an elegant gown. Whatever their style of the day, chances are they're barefoot. On days where they're feeling fancy, one might find them wearing makeup.

Briar is utterly taken with Arthur. They were lovers in Prosperity, and they remain infatuated with him.

Briar has decided that one lifetime just isn't enough to spend with this man.

We have so much history behind us now.

Sometimes our relationship has been rocky, but she is always unforgettable.

The Optimist

Sweetest friend.

Tommy Rodgers.jpg

Tommy Rodgers (Slasher)

Drug Dealer
Tommy Rodgers is Danny's mom's on and off again boyfriend. When she has kicked him out, he lives in his VW bus and goes wherever he wants. He's also Danny's weed man.

Tommy likes hanging out with Danny and his friends. He wants to be the cool older guy the youngsters look up to, but most of the time, he just gets taken advantage of and doesn't seem to know the difference.

Evaline Mitchell.png

Evaline Mitchell (Slasher)

Film Student / Sound Technician
Evaline Mitchell thought she wanted to act, but once she actually got into it, she discovered she was much more interested in the technical side of film-making. She gravitated toward sound production and settled there. While most of her work gets done back in the studio, she came along with the others to the Eager Beaver Lodge to assist the others with technical details as well as capturing some nature sounds and dialog.

Eva is all business on the job, but she's got a wild side in her free time. She parties, she drinks, and she's never been one to settle down. She likes boys, and she's never been particularly subtle about it. There's a word for girls like her, and it isn't a nice one. She doesn't care, though. As long as she's got her work, let people talk.

Georgia Stavros (Carnival)

Exotic Dancer
Georgia met Diamanto in Chicago. They frequented the same speakeasies and ran with the same gangsters and thugs. When Prohibition was repealed, the fun was over. While everyone else was getting married and settling down, Georgia ran off to the carnival with Dia and never looked back.

She learned of Dia's nature one night when they were both drinking, and Dia spilled the beans. Rather than being repulsed, Georgia was fascinated. This was the old faith of her homeland, and she willingly embraced it. She honors all the Greek pantheon, but worships Diamanto in particular.

She works the adult entertainment tent as a burlesque dancer, and while the rubes are staring at her body, she's skimming the crowd for the ones who might be looking for something a little different, a little more daring. Those she brings to Diamanto, so that Dia can have her fun.

Philomena Mitchell (Carnival)

Adult Entertainer
Philomena Mitchell was a bored housewife by the age of nineteen. A year in, and she was ready to give it up in exchange for anything. Anything! That's when she met Georgia Stavros, who came into the diner where she waited tables. The two women hit it off, and by the end of the conversation, Georgia had talked Philomena into running off with the Carnival.

Philly soon met Diamanto, and in her she saw everything she wanted to be, wild and free, alluring and dangerous. She became a worshiper, tending to her ladyship's day to day needs. She fears Diamanto, but she adores her, too.

To earn her keep with the Carnival, Philly turns tricks in the brothel tent. It's not glamorous, but it still beats being married.

Ethel Whitmore (Carnival)

Ethel has the voice of an angel and the disposition of a sinner. Disowned by her family for practicing witchcraft, Ethel made her way alone in the world doing whatever she had to do to survive. Her daddy taught her to fire a gun, her mother taught her how to cook, and the church taught her how to sing.

She's had a few jobs in a few clubs, but it's hard to make it in the world alone, especially as a woman of color in the 1930s. She walked away from her share of jobs because she refused to be ruled by some man with dollar signs in his eyes.

Eventually, she saw the Carnival come into town, and she met Diamanto, who saw in her a kindred spirit: a woman fiercely protective of her independence, with a connection to the wilder things in the world. Dia talked her into staying on, and in time Ethel became one of Dia's worshipers.

She sings in the burlesque tent and is strictly eye candy. Putting a hand on her is a good way to lose it, unless she likes you, and Ethel doesn't like very many people.

John Paul Hayes (Project Icarus)

Security Grunt
Johnny's been on one shitty mission after another ever since his wife left him and took the kids some ten years ago. He sends the money back home, but that's the only nod he gives to his former life. He prefers to be out here in the cosmic wilderness. He doesn't seek promotion or recognition. He just wants to get the job done and move on to the next. Maybe that's why he's still a grunt well into his fifties. It ain't a glamorous life, but Johnny wouldn't have it any other way.

Anna Wilkins (Bonds of Blood)

High School Student
Anna Wilkins grew up in a working class family, the youngest of four children. All three of her brothers went into construction, which is what her father did before he hurt his back and ended up on disability. Anna's mother is out of the picture. Her parents divorced when she was ten, and mama sees her every other summer, if she can squeeze in time for a visit.

After school, Anna works at the radio station as an administrative assistant. She's basically in the mail room when she isn't filing or getting the DJs another cup of coffee. She dreams of being on the air someday, but she's so soft-spoken it's hard to imagine her finding her voice.

When she's not at work, Anna finds reasons to hang out at school, or the mall, or the cemetery. Anything to keep her from having to go home to her grumpy father and witch of a stepmother.

Elliot Kim (Bonds of Blood)

Guidance Counselor
Elliot Kim got his start in education as a teacher, but he really hit his stride with counseling. He really does want what's best for the kids, even when they're driving him bonkers.

Mr. K is considered kind of cool, for an adult. He's a nice guy who treats teenagers like they're people. Sure would be a pity if something bad happened to him.

Rebar (The Last Road)

Rebar is a War Child, born and bred. He's never known any other life than that in the Garage. He relies on Kitten to keep his ride in peak shape, and Kitten likes how fast Rebar drives. Any time they can ride with Rebar, it's a treat. It's a simple friendship based on simple principles: fix car, go fast.

Rebar can tell, though, that he's getting to the end of the line. The sickness is starting to take him, and he's determined that he'll die in glorious battle before that can happen.

Zephyr (The Last Road)

Zephyr is one of the blessed ones, clean and pretty. He's O+, healthy, and educated in the arts of pleasure, among other things. Though he doesn't have all that much autonomy over his body, he's seen how the others live, and he's comfortable where he is. Besides, it's all he's ever known.

Zeph enjoys Lux. While not everything is necessarily a transaction, Lux is a good way to get in good with him. Love comes and goes, but shiny things are forever.

Oh, and he's Drak and Cinder's baby brother.

Martin Munson (Prosperity's Price)

The son of the prodigal son, Martin is the bastard child of Eleanor Munson's wayward son Albert. Though Martin was brought up in the East, everyone of the Blood returns to Prosperity, and Martin has accompanied his father home. There were mishaps along the way, and Albert arrived home in a pine box. Martin now finds himself among strangers he must rely upon to survive, with nothing more than a pittance left to him by his father.

Martin was a librarian back in Indianapolis, though work has never been his strong suit. He loves books, but it's the people he can't stand. He would much prefer to spend his days taking it easy and enjoying the comforts wealth has to offer.

One of those comforts is laudanum. Martin was introduced to the stuff after he took a painful injury to the shoulder. The injury healed, but the pain never did, not wholly. Martin has come to learn that, without the laudanum, the pain becomes downright unbearable. He's not proud of what he would do to acquire the stuff should he run out, but one must understand, he simply needs it. It's the only thing that will make him better.

Danny Novak (Slasher)

The son of organic hippie farmers in the nowhere wasteland of Coachella, California, Danny grew up with little to do but play music and do drugs. He was smart enough to get into college, and his parents are certainly wealthy enough to pay for it, so college it was! He should have a degree in something by this point, but he never applies himself. He's mostly about the music and the drugs.

He knows a fair bit about a variety of things - he has taken a lot of classes and actually pays attention in the ones he likes, and is far from useless. He just has a hard time taking anything too seriously or really committing effort. His Mom's boyfriend hanging around doesn't help as he's the supplier of the drugs. And no, his parents aren't divorced - they're hippies.

Diamond Devil (Carnival)

Coming To America

Diamanto was one of the ancient nymphs at Nysa, there to receive the infant Dionysus when he was brought to her and her sisters by Hermes. They nursed Dionysus and he in turn slowly drove them mad. It wasn't the god's fault. To love him was to adore madness. As he grew stronger the nymphs of Nysa lost their minds wholly to his power, and his maenads were born.

Those were blissful days, raging through the wilderness in a frenzy of wine, copulation, and violence. Life was one unending party, and if mortals got caught up and torn apart in the frenzy, that was the cost of perfect ecstasy. They were creatures of the wild, and nature is red in tooth and claw.

Diamanto started to wane when new faith began to supplant the old. There was no place for her in the Christian church, who likened her beloved lord to their Satan. His followers became the new church's sworn enemies. As belief shifted, the maenads weakened. They were rounded up and punished. Most of them perished in time, and Dionysus retreated from this new and offputting world.

Worship was relegated to small, remote places done in secret, and Diamanto had to survive off those scraps for centuries.

Wars came, empires rose and fell, and at the dawn of the Twentieth Century, even the small and remote places in Greece could no longer sustain her. Diamanto left with a small clutch of her worshipers on a boat that brought them to a new land. There was so much wilderness to explore! But her worshipers settled in the city, a place called Chicago.

There were no trees, no streams, no beasts to tear apart. Still, the urban jungle is just another kind of wild if one knows where to look. By the time Prohibition had come along, Diamanto went by Dia, and she ran with gangsters in the seedy underbelly of the city. She was a shining star of the speakeasies, and though she still had to present herself carefully, there was always a niche to appreciate her particular brand of womanhood.

Once Prohibition was over, though, Chicago wasn't any fun anymore. Most of her worshipers had been forced by circumstance to forego revelry for the soul-sucking necessity of hard work. They were lost to her, and this wild city had been tamed. It was time to move on.

Carnival of Wonders

With a few of her remaining worshipers, girls whose heads Dia filled with the ideas of living free and unrestrained in this society of men, Dia left the city in search of anything that would keep her alive. For days her and her entourage wandered the dry and withered land until they found an oasis of belief in the form of a carnival.

Here, she could sustain herself on the awe of mortals who came to gaze at her. She could slake her passion on rubes looking for a good time, and if she broke one once in awhile, well, she would just have to be careful to pick men no one would miss.

It wasn't perfect. She had to let her facial hair grow to be seen as an oddity instead of the beauty she was. She reveled in it, though, watching men grow hard despite themselves, to see them wanting her even though she broke every rule of femininity. Every time she could turn a nice Christian man into a depraved animal, she avenged her god and fed her aching soul.

Yes, this new home would do nicely.

Diamanto knows she's only delaying the inevitable. She is the last of her kind, and one day she will join her sisters in oblivion. There are days she remembers who she was before Dionysus' madness took hold, but those memories are dangerous. They threaten to separate her from what she is, what she needs to be just to keep from fading away. She drinks to keep those memories at bay. She drinks a lot.

Besides, nymphs are silly creatures who fall in love and end up turned into trees or rivers. The lure of a husband, a cottage, and a white picket fence is deadly poison. Every time some rube promises her a happily ever after if she'll run away with him, she has to push back, because part of her wants that, and it would be her death knell.

Braden Flower (Project Icarus)

Braden grew up on a space station, the youngest of two. His sister Jazz was the bossy one and Braden was the follower. He was very smart when it came to academics and dumber than hell when it came to personal life choices. That's how he ended up a father at sixteen. Unable to care for his son Ben, he left him with Jazz to raise, then went out into the world to get his shit together.

There were a few detours along the way. During his higher education, Braden got caught up in addiction and petty crime, in a group marriage with people who weren't good influences, and on his way to rock bottom. He always found money to send home to Ben. It's just that the source of that money was often questionable.

Fortunately, Braden pulled himself out of his tailspin with the help of faith. He joined a religion that believes the cosmos is sentient and self-aware (and is more or less God). He left his old life behind, and he changed his name from Bloom to Flower to get a fresh start. He doubled down on his studies and became one of the youngest doctors in his fields of xenobiology and xenopsychology.

His work is already getting him recognition among his fellow scholars, though he's not in it for the accolades. He wants to prove that the cosmos is sentient, and that his faith is true. When he heard about an asteroid ignoring physics and exhibiting self-preservation, he jumped at the chance to be one of the scientists going to explore it. His sister got him the gig, and while his faith is his primary motivation, he also wants to get rich with her so they can both give Ben the best life possible.

Devereux Jaden Marchant (Bonds of Blood)

The youngest of the Marchant triplets, Devereux Jaden "Jade" Marchant has been fighting since he drew his first breath. He was a sickly baby and a weak child, but where others would fall behind and eventually give in, every time life knocked Jade down, he got back up. What he lacks in physical strength he makes up for in visceral determination.

He's got a complex about being seen as the lesser son. His older brother Theodore is so much more accomplished, and he plays the role of Marchant scion well. Jade struggles to fit in the family mold. He's too strange, too wild, and there are just a few quirks he knows he's not going to grow out of. He resents Theodore for making him look bad, and he's jealous. So, so jealous.

He's deeply attached to his sisters, and maybe from the outside looking in it might seem like he's too attached. Maybe it's because, by comparison, he doesn't seem to spend all that much time around girls. Not in a way a typical teen-aged boy might. Plenty of friends who are girls, but no girlfriends.

He claims he has a girlfriend named Amanda. She lives in Paris, and she's a model. She's super hot, and she's totally real. He could show you pictures. He just doesn't want to.

In December of 1993, Jade's best friend Tasha was killed, and her body was found just outside of town. The police haven't found the perp yet. Jade was the last one to see Tasha alive, and since her death, he's been partying a little too much and hitting the drugs too hard. Some say he's spiraling.
